As we head into the holiday break, I want to take a moment to wish our students and families a restful and enjoyable time together. I greatly appreciate being here and couldn't have asked for a better start to my tenure here in Onalaska. Thank you for your continued partnership and for taking the time to stay informed as we work to support you, our students, and community.

From my family (both here at the district and at-home) to yours, I hope you have a great holidays and a happy new year. I am excited to continue our work and climb in 2026!

Exploring New Opportunities Exploring New Opportunities

The School District of Onalaska is committed to being open and transparent with our families. As some of you may know, public education is currently facing a number of challenges related to enrollment.

Like many districts across our state, Onalaska is seeing a gradual decline in enrollment. This is not because families are leaving our schools. Census data clearly shows that fewer children are being born and living in our area, which is already land-locked and has limited opportunities for new housing thus naturally impacting growth.

Despite this reality, Onalaska remains a district of choice. We are one of the few districts in the area with positive open enrollment, meaning more families outside our boundaries are choosing to attend our schools than resident families leaving. We are proud of that and we remain focused on continuing to earn the trust of families through strong academics, thoughtful planning, and innovative programming.

Virtual programming

One area we are beginning to explore is adding a full-time online learning option. To be clear: Our goal is not to pull students out of our buildings. We firmly believe there is great value in the experiences that happen everyday in our classrooms. At the same time, we understand some families are looking for a virtual option, and we want to explore whether that need can be met within our district.

Currently, families seeking online schooling must leave our district. We believe there may be an opportunity to address that need while allowing students to remain connected to Onalaska, even if they are learning in a different way. In addition to our resident students, this program would also be available to any K-12 families across Wisconsin that are interested in a virtual option through a high-achieving district like Onalaska - adding another tool to support our continued standing as a district of choice.

While no decisions have been made, the district has already started researching what this could look like. If an online program were established, it would be required to operate as a charter school and be overseen by a governing board primarily made up of non-district staff. As this work is still in the early stages, we wanted to gauge interest from families and community members who may wish to service in this role. Those who may be interested are encouraged to complete the form linked here.

What's next

As with any major initiative, we are committed to moving forward thoughtfully and transparently. Exploring a virtual academy is one way we are proactively planning for the future while staying true to our commitment of working together to ensure higher levels of learning for all.

We encourage you to stay engaged as we learn more and consider next steps. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Update: Full Day 4K Update: Full Day 4K

A big thank you to those of you that submitted feedback as we are continuing to explore the option of adding full day 4K programming to our district.

The Board of Education held an informational session on full day 4K in early December. While nothing was officially approved from that meeting, we do expect the board to hold a formal vote on whether or not to begin offering full day 4K programming for the 2026-27 school year in January. We will be sure to keep you updated if and when a vote is scheduled.

Ona Teachers Giving Back Ona Teachers Giving Back

A quick recap on an event I'm incredibly proud of: More than 120 food baskets were packed and delivered over the weekend to district families looking for extra support over the holidays. Each basket contained the fixings for a traditional holiday meal as well as other grocery staples. This entire project is organized by the Onalaska Education Association which is made up of district staff members. Food was donated or purchased through efforts from our staff as well as generous area businesses. A big thank you to all our teachers, staff, volunteers, and the community for coming together to help each other! Very proud to be a Hilltopper!

OHS Varsity Girls Basketball Coach and math teacher Tom Cowley is battling Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. On January 9, we invite you to pack the fieldhouse for our varsity basketball double header to cheer on our Hilltoppers, raise funds, and show support. "Together we are a team. Stronger than ever!"

Please see the flyer below for more information. Please note: The shirt sale ended last night, but we'd still love to see you at the game(s)!
