Keeping Up with Colden
February Newsletter from Colden Elementary School
From the Principal's Desk
Starting after mid-winter recess, all full-day UPK students will have the option to take district transportation. We are hoping this offering will help our district support access to early childhood learning for our youngest students. We hope that our providing transportation will allow families more flexibility, and increase enrollment. This initiative will continue for next year's UPK students (once they are four years of age as well).
UPK registration is officially open and I would love your help spreading the word. All forms are due to Colden Elementary School by Friday, February 17th. Please see below for more information and to register your child for UPK for the 2023-2024 school year.
Our PARP theme this year is... Reading Makes Me Wanna Shout! Our student body voted and the winning theme was "Buffalo Bills". Our PARP committee has so many new fun activities planned this year to get our students excited about reading. Families, one of the most important things you can do with your child is read with them, and foster a love for reading!
Best,
Mrs. Langworthy
SIGN UP FOR UNIVERSAL PREK BY FEBRUARY 17
Message from Nicole Gugino, S-GI PR Specialist
Springville-Griffith Institute CSD is offering Full-Day Universal Pre-Kindergarten sessions in-house at Colden Elementary School and with our partners at Early Bird for the 2023-2024 school year! Thanks to additional State funding for UPK that we received beginning in 2022-23, we plan to present the following options:
- Full-day UPK at Colden Elementary School
- Full-day UPK at Early Bird Childcare Center
Please indicate which location you prefer by checking the choices below. New this year, transportation will be provided to both locations by our Transportation Department to and from school. Please note that students must be four years old to ride a school bus, and so families of UPK students that are three years old at the beginning of the school year will need to transport their child until their fourth birthday.
Surveys must be returned by Friday, February 17th to participate in the lottery and space is limited. Letters from S-GI notifying you of your child’s enrollment status will be mailed by the end of May. Official registration materials will be sent to those selected from the lottery process.
Surveys may be dropped off or mailed to Colden Elementary School, 8263 Boston-Colden Road, Colden, NY 14033, Attention: UPK. Surveys may also be dropped off at the main office of any S-GI school, but they must be in a sealed envelope and labeled “UPK – Colden Elementary."
The primary purpose of our UPK program is to provide four-year-old children with the opportunity to access high-quality programs that prepare them for future school success through the development of strong foundational skills in early literacy and mathematics. Science and social studies themes are also explored. Our goal is to encourage and support student learning by utilizing a student-centered approach based on strong instructional content that is tied directly to the New York State Pre-K Standards.
If your child is currently receiving special education services through the CPSE, please contact Mrs. Gow, Director of Special Education, at 592-3256 before completing this form.
To be eligible, your child:
- Must be age four (4) by December 1, 2023 (A child who is age-eligible to attend kindergarten is not eligible for the UPK program).
- Must be a resident of the Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District (Section 3602-e of Education Law).
- Must meet all medical record and immunization requirements for school attendance.
- Parents must make a commitment to regular daily attendance.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Langworthy, UPK Coordinator, at 716-592-3217.

Partnering with PTA
As part of our always highly anticipated annual PARP (Pick A Reading Partner) event, the PTA is hosting a Bingo for Books night at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1st. Bring the family, play some bingo, and win some books to grow your home libraries! Watch your students’ take-home folders in February for more details.
Also, we are partnering with Essentially Well Oiled for another chocolate sale in March. This is a great way to benefit our students while supporting a local business. Order forms will be sent home around Monday, March 6th, and the sale will run through Friday, March 17. All proceeds are used to fund programs for students at Colden Elementary.
The PTA meets the second Wednesday of the month via Zoom at 7 p.m. Membership is open to more than just parents and guardians. Any community member who has a student at Colden is welcome to participate. We are always looking for more ideas on how to make our school even better for our kids, so please join us for our next meeting on February 8!

Second Grade Mystery Readers
Second Graders enjoy Mystery Readers on Fridays. The week before, the 2nd graders try to guess who is coming in using clues that the readers supply. They love being surprised by parents and leaders of our district.
