SPIRIT WEEK!
Dear LMS Families,
Good morning - can you believe we only have 3 weeks left together this school year?
I'm not ready to let our 8th graders go, but they have been working hard to push our buttons lately. Please spend some time talking with your 8th grader and naming how difficult it is to leave a place that has become so familiar for a new place that is unknown and an experience that feels intimidating. High school is exciting, new, and often terrifying, and at this point when we near the very end of middle school kids fall apart a little bit. You may or may not be seeing it at home too (maybe even with your 5th grader as they gear up for the transition to middle school). It is a normal part of growing up and a valid way to feel during big transitions, but we also want to help them close our their experience in middle school feeling good about how things ended. Sometimes it's easier to blow up a relationship than it is to say good bye because they don't have the words - as a staff, we are steady and consistent (if not a little bit holding on for dear life) and giving them the space and the support they need, and we appreciate your support as well. We can do this!
Last Friday our Project Based Math 8 and Compacted Math classes (7th grade) went on a field trip to the Women in Trades Fair and had an incredible time! You can see some of the images captured from their hands on learning experience - thanks to Ms. Hammett and Mr. Macke for making this happen for our kids!
This week we have a packed agenda, with our WEB Leadership interviews on Wednesday to select the next group of LMS leaders. This week is also our final few days of Spring SUN Session ending with the SUN showcase on Thursday. Thursday is also our 8th graders full day field trip to the Bonneville Dam and Friday we send our 7th graders to Wildwood for their full day field trip adventure.
Let's have a great week!
Warmly,
Rosemarie El Youssef
LMS Principal
End of Year Medication Pick-up
Hello LMS families,
As a friendly, end-of-year reminder, please pick up your student’s medication from the health room. Medication must be picked up by an adult - we are not able to send any medication home with students.
Medication must be picked up by the last day of school (Friday, June 5). We are not allowed to store medication over the summer - any medication that is not picked up will be disposed of.
Questions? Call Nurse Phoenix at 503-209-1909 or Health Assistant Anali at 503-916-6355.
Thank you and have a wonderful summer break!

A NOTE FROM SUN
LMS SUN Programs
Hello Lane SUN Families,
This is the last week of SUN Spring Session! Please join us for our Spring Showcase this Thursday, May 21st from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for performances, a flag football game, and more! Also, get your first opportunity to sign up for Summer SUN!
Here are a few REMINDERS for afterschool programming:
If your child has a SUN class, they are expected to be in the cafeteria right after the bell rings. Any student who leaves the building will not be allowed to attend SUN for that day. UNLESS, there was an excused absence and the parent/guardian notified SUN Staff. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO DAIRY QUEEN OR SAWYERS BEFORE SUN STARTS.
Pick up time for SUN is 5:30pm.
Transportation check! Please look at your email for your child’s SUN schedule. In that email, I listed the transportation allowed for your child. PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS AND ADULTS ARE ON THE SAME PAGE ABOUT THEIR TRANSPORTATION. Once students are released from SUN at 5:30pm, they are expected to know what the plan is whether they are walking home, catching the SUN activity BUS, or an adult is picking them up at the front of the school.
Afterschool attendance is important. 3 unexcused absences will result in dropping your child from the class. Please communicate with SUN Staff when your child is home sick or will need to miss SUN for the day.
Thank you all for reading through everything! See you all tomorrow!
Sincerely,
SUN Staff
PLEASE REVIEW WITH YOUR CHILD LMS SUN’s Expectations for Students and Families
Lane SUN is here to provide fun enrichment programs that are inclusive for all, while maintaining the safety for those who are participating. Therefore we have created some Lane SUN Expectations that all Students will need to follow.
Positive and Appropriate Language Use at all times.
Cell Phone Policy Use: Cell Phones are to be used before SUN programs, Breakfast/Lunch, and after SUN programs. Cell phones will remain on Silent during the SUN Program. Families are encouraged to contact the SUN Site Manager Chelsea Kimura 971-917-6285 or the SUN Site Assistant Will Grebner 503-896-1473 for emergencies during the SUN working hours.
Attendance Policy: If you need to leave the program early, you MUST have a parent/guardian permission & check out with a SUN staff before leaving. Students are to sign in and out with specific times of coming in and leaving the Lane SUN Program. This helps us to keep track of students and to let families know when students are leaving the program. If you are concerned about your student’s attendance, please email the Lane SUN site manager Chelsea Kimura (Chelsea.kimura@portlandoregon.gov).
ZERO tolerance for bullying. Respect instructors and peers at all times to help maintain our SUN space to be inclusive and safe for all.

🙋♂️FAMILY INTEREST SURVEY
LMS families help make the middle experience great for our students. There are so many ways you can choose to be involved—from chaperoning a field trip to volunteering at a school event to helping with teacher appreciation. We encourage every family to complete the Family Interest Survey to share how you would like to engage in our school community:
📣 SUPPORT THE LMS STUDENT STORE
At Lane Middle School, our reward system celebrates students who take initiative and live out our core values of being accountable, safe, and kind. When students demonstrate responsibility for their learning and actions, make choices that contribute to a safe and respectful environment, or go out of their way to show kindness to others, they earn “keys” as recognition for their positive impact. These keys serve as both encouragement and a tangible reminder that their actions matter. Students can save and spend their keys at our student store, choosing from a variety of fun and motivating items. This system not only reinforces positive behavior but also builds a school culture where accountability, safety, and kindness are seen, valued, and rewarded every day.
If you would like to help motivate our students and keep the school store stocked, you can find our Amazon Wish List at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/VY1AQGAOY394?type=wishlist
