Building Access
Our school opens for supervised arrival of students at 9:00am. If you arrive earlier than the supervisory staff, you are expected to stay with your student(s) until the teacher’s exterior door and/or the front and back double doors of the foyer are open. If you arrive after 9:10 and the doors are closed, we ask you to walk your student(s) to the office for a Tardy slip.
During school hours, building access is restricted to Staff, Students and cleared Volunteers. Parents may not accompany their students past the front office at drop off. If you intend to chaperone field trips or otherwise be in the school while children are present, you must be an approved volunteer. The process can take a couple of weeks; we highly encourage you to apply in advance rather than waiting until you need clearance. Before/Aftercare
If you need to drop off your child earlier than 9:00am or pick up later than 3:35pm (2:35 on Wednesdays), you may want to enroll them in the Before/After Care program called Right At School. Attendance & Changes to Dismissal procedure
Attendance and dismissal changes must be communicated to the office via ParentSquare direct message to Attendance Secretary, emailed to cherrydaleoffice@steilacoom.k12.wa.us or called in to the school voicemail (253) 983-2500. You may let the teacher know as well, but it is imperative to let the office know. When leaving a message about your child, please clearly state your child’s first and last name, the teacher’s name, and the reason for your call.
If your student is marked absent by the teacher and you have not notified the office regarding the absence before 9:30am, you may receive an Automatic Attendance Alert from ParentSquare. To excuse the absence, you may reply to the Automatic Attendance Alert. Alternately, you may contact the office by calling, sending a ParentSquare message or an email (see previous paragraph for contact info). Until the office hears from the parent/guardian, the absence will remain Unexcused. It is also best practice to let us know in advance if your student will be Absent, Tardy or going home early. If you will be going on a trip or know in advance that your student will be out, please fill out the Planned Absence Request located here.
If at all possible, please avoid picking up your child in the last 45 minutes of the day. We understand that there will be times when it is unavoidable, but this time of day is very busy in both the classroom and office.
Changes to dismissal must be made no later than 45 minutes before the end of the school day. Calls received later than that are not guaranteed, as the office may not get the message to the teacher/student in time, as not all classes finish their day in the classroom. It is never too early to let us know that your student will be absent, tardy, picked up early or going home a different way than is on their backpack tag.
Lunch Accounts
Cherrydale has qualified for free breakfast & lunch for all students based on the applications submitted the previous year. Please make sure you apply every year, even if you don’t think you will qualify. Durham Transportation is the bus company that Steilacoom Historical School District has contracted with. Please call them at 253-584-1365 for any concerns at the bus stop, on the bus to or from school, or with the Bus Zone app. We are happy to help in any way that we can, but your first and best point of contact for these issues will be to call Durham at 253-584-1365 option 1 for dispatch.
