Note from the Principal
February has been an exciting month of learning and celebration at our school. Our students recently completed their Progress Monitoring 2 assessments, and we are thrilled to share that they demonstrated strong growth across grade levels. Not only did our students make significant gains from PM1, but in many areas they are already outperforming where we were at this point last year. Their hard work is truly paying off, and we are so proud of the effort, perseverance, and focus they continue to show each day.
Thank you to all the families who joined us for our student‑led conferences earlier this month. Your partnership is invaluable, and it was wonderful to see students proudly sharing their goals and accomplishments. As we move forward, please remember that there are just two weeks remaining in the third quarter. Spring Break will begin on Friday, March 6, and we encourage everyone to finish the quarter strong. Thank you for your continued support and engagement in your child’s learning!
Warmly,
Ms. Amber Eliason

Communication Corner
Asking Kids About Their Day
Asking kids about their day builds stronger parent-child bonds, fosters open communication, and helps develop emotional intelligence. It encourages reflection, improves language skills, and provides opportunities to celebrate successes or address challenges. It also helps parents monitor their child’s social, emotional, and academic well-being.
Key benefits of regularly asking children about their day include:
• Strengthens Relationships: It creates a routine of connection, showing interest in their life and establishing trust.
• Encourages Reflection and Processing: It helps children process events, understand their emotions, and learn to communicate their thoughts.
• Builds Communication Skills: Open-ended questions encourage children to move beyond one-word answers, enhancing their vocabulary and ability to articulate experiences.
• Boosts Emotional Intelligence & Gratitude: Focusing on highlights (e.g., "best part of the day") fosters optimism, while discussing low points helps teach empathy and problem-solving.
• Provides Crucial Insight: It allows parents to stay informed about social dynamics, friendships, and potential issues, such as bullying or academic struggles.
Tips for Success
To move beyond "Nothing" or "Fine," try specific, open-ended questions:
• "What was the best part of your day?"
• "Did you see anyone be kind today?"
• "What was the most challenging thing you did?"
• "Rate your day on a scale of 1-10".
• Allow for "wait time" to let them think before answering.
Instead of "How was your day?", ask specific, open-ended questions that spark conversation, such as "What made you smile today?", "What was the hardest thing you did?", or "Who did you play with at recess?". These questions encourage detailed answers about social interactions, challenges, and emotional highs and lows, building better connections.
Best Questions to Get Kids Talking
• Best/Worst: What was the best part of your day? What was the hardest part?
• Emotional: What made you feel happy/proud/sad today?
• Social: Who did you play with at recess or sit with at lunch?
• Academic: What is one new thing you learned? What was the most interesting thing your teacher said?
• Funny/Silly: Did anyone do anything silly to make you laugh?
• Growth/Kindness: When were you kind to someone? Did you help anyone?
• eflective: If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?
Quick & Easy Daily Questions
• What was the peak and the pit of your day?
• Rate your day on a scale of 1-10 and tell me why.
• Did you ask any questions at school today?
• What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
• Teach me something I don't know.
Questions for Younger Kids (Preschool - Elementary)
• What games did you play at recess?
• What was the funniest thing that happened?
• What did you have for lunch?
• When were you free to be yourself today?
Questions for Older Kids
• Did you feel prepared for [class/test]?
• Who is your favorite/least favorite teacher this year?
• What is the biggest difference between this year and last year?
• Is there anything on your mind that you'd like to talk about?
Around the School
Kindergarten
Our kindergarten students have shown tremendous progress on recent progress monitoring assessments, and we are so proud of their growth. We continue to focus on building strong reading skills and fostering a love for reading in the classroom. We also celebrated the 100th Day of School, marking 100 days of learning and growth!
1st Grade
The past month has been filled with lots of hard work in preparation for testing. First grade did an outstanding job and showed how much we have learned. We enjoyed celebrating our progress and look forward to continuing a great year!
2nd Grade
In second grade, we have been studying rocks and soil in science. Students observed and identified the properties of various types of rocks and soil. Students used magnifying glasses to examine their features closely.
3rd Grade
After a field trip to the recycling center the third graders at Shadowlawn launched their own school wide recycling challenge! It has been going great and we have kept over 800 pounds of recyclables from going into the landfill. We loved sharing our progress this year with parents at student led conferences and crowning our classroom spelling bee champions from each class.
4th Grade
5th Grade
Our fifth graders have been diving deep into the American Revolution, exploring the causes, key events, and powerful voices that shaped our nation’s fight for independence. Through research using books, websites, and other sources, students created thoughtful and creative projects that showcase their understanding of this important time in history. We are so proud of the effort, detail, and historical thinking they demonstrated in bringing the Revolution to life!
Music
The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have embarked on an incredible journey of discovery. They are actually becoming real musicians! They will be learning how to read and understand musicals concepts; while at the same time learning how to play and perform on the recorder.
This will help them grow in many different ways. Music helps energize that “What if part of the brain, that scientist, writers, doctors, artist and all creative people bask in everyday.”
Who knows all the wonderful places these new adventure will lead them to in the future? Here we go!!!
CCPS Honors Chorus
Our CCPS Honors Chorus students shined last week at their county-wide performance at Aubrey Rodgers High School. Big thanks to our music teacher Mr. Chris Ellison and his hard working students.
