Student Cell Phone/Social Media Seminar
Dear BHS students and families,
On May 25th, 2023, Youth & Education Advisor for the Center for Humane Technology Max Stossel hosted a student seminar at BHS titled “We’ve Been Sneaking Into Your Brains,” illustrating specific ways technology is designed to be addictive & distracting. In his seminar, he also provided tools to help combat these designs, and opened a much-needed discussion in our school community about the impact of cell phones & social media on our student’s overall health and well-being as well as their focus on school. Max was a media strategist with an extensive background in social media, running platforms for multinational brands, and later working for a social media company where he designed some of the notification structures to distract people about which he now raises awareness. Over the past six years, he has spoken with 100,000+ students, parents, and educators around the world about social media's impact on our lives and creating resources to help manage that impact.
In follow up to this seminar, I want to share with you the resource linked here to support the discussion of these topics with your student: https://www.socialawakening.org/s/Education-In-The-Age-Of-Distraction-Follow-Up-SA.pdf
Our BHS Behavior Team has been investigating this topic over the course of the year and we are working toward a building-wide Cell Phone Policy for implementation at BHS in the 2023-24 school year. Following Max’s recommendation, we have been reviewing resources provided by AwayForTheDay.org to inform our work, which I have linked here for your review as well. If you would like to discuss these topics with me or to be a part of the conversation in shaping this policy, please reach out to me at the email address or phone number below.
Thank you, and I look forward to our collaboration and continued discussion on this topic.
