Whale Tales
August 2024

Principal's Message
Dear Webster Community,
Although it was a blazing hot week in SoCal, that didn’t stop our Whales from diving into all the fun! This week was a perfect snapshot of what makes Webster such a special place — joyful learning, community connection, and meaningful global engagement.
We had the immense honor of welcoming Brooks Kamanakao, Director of African Programs for the Botswana School Project, to campus. With his infectious smile and warmth, Brooks lit up every classroom he visited, teaching students about animal conservation and adaptations, and sharing his passion with our PTA and students at MES and MMS. One of the week’s most heartwarming highlights was our second cultural Zoom exchange with the students of Motopi Primary School. Dressed in traditional tribal wear, they performed a joyful dance — with Brooks explaining that the undulating is a sign of happiness. In return, our students shared thoughtful artifacts, including a “Predator and Prey” song, and even introduced them to the concept of a mountain bike!
Our BSP team also had the privilege of meeting with Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton and Isaac Burgess, Executive Director of the Malibu Pathway, to share the impact of this partnership and explore how we can expand and sustain this important work. Their enthusiasm and support meant so much to our team, and we are grateful for their interest in deepening our connection with Motopi. Thank you to everyone who joined the exchange — in person and on Zoom — and please consider donating to our ongoing school supply drive to support students in Botswana (see flyer below).
We also had a blast at Friday's Jog-a-Thon! Despite the heat, our Whales ran their hearts out while families lined the track, cheering every step. We met our $30,000 pledge goal before the event even started, and all students enjoyed Kona Ice to celebrate. A special shoutout to Emily Gardner and Lauren Ifft for organizing such a well-run event, and to the many parents who helped with t-shirts, shade tents, lap counting, and cleanup. Coach Bell ensured our students were stretched and ready to run, and DJ dads Gus Peterson and Joel Dunn kept the beats (and laughs) flowing all day long. Telly’s amazing t-shirt design is now a permanent part of our Webster Wear rotation — and it was wonderful to see all the creative student design submissions displayed on the wall!
We also celebrated our budding scientists during Pepperdine Science Night, where over 40 students and faculty from Pepperdine joined us for a night of hands-on exploration. Thank you to Dr. Krista Lucas for organizing another dynamic event, and to our Webster PTA for fueling the fun with pizza and water. Students explored glowing bacteria and 3D-printed squid, learned about ocean pollution, experimented with density, and made slime with the Chemistry Club. We appreciate everyone who took part in the optional student survey — your feedback helps us grow this partnership each year.
Our week also featured a joyful 4th Grade Dance Informance, wrapping up their 12-week residency with the Santa Monica College Dance Academy. Students performed traditional Mexican and Hawaiian dances with energy and pride — even getting families on their feet to join in! Thank you to Caron Eule Zlotchew and instructors Joaquin and Keali’i for bringing this cultural celebration to life.
Looking ahead, don’t forget that Open House is Thursday, March 26 from 6–7 PM. Students are excited to showcase their learning — especially their project-based work — and all families (Preschool – 5th grade) should plan to attend.

BSP Spotlight: Global Connections and Community 🌍
This week, we had the immense honor of welcoming Brooks Kamanakao, Director of African Programs for the Botswana School Project, to Webster! Brooks has been visiting classrooms to teach our students about animal conservation and adaptations, and even shared an engaging presentation with our PTA, as well as students at Malibu Elementary and Malibu Middle School. His infectious smile and warmth radiated all over campus, sparking joy and curiosity wherever he went — students and staff alike were captivated by his stories, knowledge, and genuine passion for education.
Our BSP team also had the opportunity to meet with Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton and Isaac Burgess, Executive Director of the Malibu Pathway, to share this impactful work and explore how we can expand and sustain our partnership. We are incredibly grateful for their interest, encouragement, and support in creating greater access to educational resources for the students of Motopi Primary School in Botswana.
One of the week’s most memorable moments was our second cultural Zoom exchange with the students at Motopi. Dressed in traditional tribal attire, they shared a beautiful cultural dance with us — Brooks explained that undulating during the dance is a sign of happiness. Webster students prepared thoughtful artifacts and shared learning experiences in return. Our 2nd graders even performed their “Predator and Prey” song, and we introduced them to something completely new: a mountain bike!
During the exchange, students thoughtfully reflected on the similarities and differences between their lives and those of their Motopi peers. They found common ground in the warmth of shared smiles, the pride in their homes, and the joy of traditional dances. At the same time, they recognized differences in access to school supplies, clothing styles, hair color, and the availability of electricity. We are especially thankful to Mr. Joel at Motopi for persevering through connection challenges so we could continue this powerful exchange. We were also thrilled to have so many parents and district leaders join us in person and on Zoom for this heartwarming experience.
To support our friends in Botswana, the Botswana School Project Team are leading a school supply drive (see flyer below for details). Please consider donating items like pencils, pens, highlighters, and stickers to help support essential learning needs.
This partnership has been an extraordinary gift to our community. It’s deeply moving to witness the genuine connection and care between our schools — and it’s clear how much our Webster students are growing as global citizens through this journey. Thank you for your continued support of this important and meaningful work!
Weekly Spotlight
Check out these wonderful moments featuring our incredible students, staff, and parents! If you have a photo that you’d like to share, please send it to Principal Diana—we’d love to include it on our social media or upcoming newsletters.
Thank you for helping us celebrate our school community!
🤔 Pod Power Problems!
Whales on the Move: Jog-A-Thon 2026! 🏃
What an incredible day of energy, community, and school spirit! Despite the blazing temperatures, our Whales ran their hearts out — and it was amazing to see so many families lining the track, cheering every step of the way.
We’re thrilled to share that we met our $30,000 pledge goal before the first lap was even run! All students celebrated with a refreshing treat from the Kona Ice Truck. Our 3rd graders, who are currently designing their own food trucks for a project-based learning unit, got a special behind-the-scenes tour of how the Kona Truck works!
A huge round of applause to Emily Gardner and Lauren Ifft for leading the charge and organizing a fantastic event. Thank you to the countless volunteers who sorted t-shirts, counted laps, hauled shade tents, and kept the energy sky-high. We especially loved the return of our beloved DJs — Gus Peterson and Joel Dunn — who kept us laughing and moving all day long.
We’re also grateful to Coach Bell, who made sure students were stretched, warmed up, and ready to run safely. His pre-run routines helped set a strong and healthy tone for the day! Telly deserves a huge shoutout for designing this year’s fantastic Jog-A-Thon shirts—they’ve now earned a spot in everyone’s Webster Wear rotation! It was also great to see all the creative student design submissions on display, showcasing the incredible talent across our campus.
🏅Wondering who the winners are? Stay tuned — once lap totals are finalized, we’ll be announcing top fundraisers, class participation champs, and more.
STEM-tacular Pepperdine Science Night! 🔬 ✨
What an incredible evening of curiosity, collaboration, and scientific exploration! A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Krista Lucas for organizing such a dynamic event — nearly 40 Pepperdine students and faculty members joined us for a night packed with hands-on learning. We’re also so grateful to our amazing Webster PTA for providing pizza and water before the event — the perfect fuel for an evening of discovery!
Families and students rotated through a wide range of interactive stations, including:
-
Exploring glowing bacteria and squid teamwork — with take-home 3D-printed squid!
-
Acting out food chains in the Santa Monica Mountains by playing a lively game of predator-prey rock-paper-scissors
-
Learning how pollution impacts our oceans and how we can make a difference
-
Testing hypotheses about density by designing aluminum foil boats and seeing how many washers they could hold before sinking
-
Making SLIME with the Pepperdine Chemistry Club while learning about triple bonds!
Thank you to all the families who also participated in the optional student survey at the end of the evening — your feedback helps us grow and sustain this amazing partnership.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s Science Night! 🧪🌟
💃 Dance, Culture, Community: 4th Grade Takes the Stage! 🌺
This week, our 4th grade students wrapped up their dance residency with a joyful and heartwarming informance that celebrated culture, movement, and learning. As part of the Santa Monica College Dance Academy’s Arts in Education program, students have spent the past 12 weeks immersed in traditional Mexican and Hawaiian dance during their school day—an experience that came alive on stage!
Dressed in colorful skirts, dresses, and button-down shirts, our students danced with enthusiasm and pride—sharing the joy of cultural movement with an audience full of cheering families. The celebration even had parents on their feet, joining in on the fun!
A huge thank you to Caron Eule Zlotchew, Program Coordinator of the SMC Dance Academy, for leading this powerful experience, and to instructors Joaquin (Mexican Dance) and Keali'i (Hawaiian Dance) for sharing your expertise and passion with our students. Your guidance helped bring confidence, creativity, and connection into every performance. It was a beautiful reminder of how the arts enrich education and bring us together as a community!
📚 Webster Open House: Student Learning Showcase 📚
Mark your calendars! We’re thrilled to invite all Webster families (PreK/TK–5th) to our Open House on Tuesday, March 26 from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. ✅ Action Needed: Google Workspace Permissions
SMMUSD is asking parents and guardians to review and update their authorization for students to access certain educational Google services, including YouTube, Google Maps, Google Translate, and more. The most commonly used “Additional Services” include:
