St. Nicholas Day
St. Nicholas is celebrated on December 6th. St. Nicholas is the patron saint for children and sailors and lives on in the 4th century in Turkey. A church was built in Newtown Jerpoint and dedicated to the saint after his death. One night he went down the chimney of a house with a man and three daughters too poor to be married, he went down the chimney to give the daughters money in secret. On the third night he was caught by the father and he begged him not to tell anyone about his good deeds to everyone. Once the story got out everyone seemed to think that the mystery gift they were given was from Nicolas.
Bodhi Day
Bodhi Day is celebrated each year on December 8th. The holiday commemorates the day that Buddha, or Shakyamuni, achieved enlightenment. Unlike most holidays, Bodhi Day is celebrated in a calm manner through meditation and prayer. Some Buddhists will decorate a small Bodhi tree with lights, and Buddha-themed ornaments.
Hanukkah
The Hanukkah celebration is celebrated on the start on December 7 to December 15. The Hanukkah celebration revolves around a kindling of a nine-branched menorah, known in Hebrew as the Hanukah. Each of the eight nights of the holiday, another candle is added to the menorah after the sun goes down; the ninth candle is called the shamash (“helper”), and is used to light the others. Jew recite the blessings during this ritual and display the menorah in windows as a reminder to others of the miracle that inspired the holiday. Traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil. Another Hanukkah custom is playing with four-sided spinning tops called dreidels and exchanging gifts.
