6-year plans nearly complete

As of December 3, 96.9% of our seniors have met with their school counselor to review their six-year plan. We gave them copies of their transcript, articulated what credits are required to graduate, discussed their post-secondary plans and how to achieve them, and checked on their mental health.

45% of our seniors have applied to four-year colleges

As of December 3, we have sent 705 transcripts on behalf of 102 students to the colleges where they are applying. Each time a senior gives us a copy of their acceptance letter, we update their status in Naviance, and post their good news in the hallway outside of our office.

Monitor Naviance for scholarships

After submitting college applications, requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation, and completing the FAFSA, students are encouraged to apply for scholarships.

BCPS's office of school counseling keeps an updated list of regional or national scholarship opportunities in Naviance. Go to the colleges section, and click on "scholarship list." Keep your own list of scholarships from that main list that seem appropriate for you, so you can cross them off once you've applied.

Just as with college applications, if you need something from a counselor or teacher for a scholarship application, please make that request at least two weeks in advance of the deadline.

NIH Summer Internship Program

My name is Lizzy Jackson Fleischmann and I am the High School Coordinator for the Summer Internship Program with the NIH National Institute on Aging Intramural Research Program (NIA IRP) Training Office. The NIA IRP training office has internship opportunities for students interested in biomedical science, biomedical engineering, or bioinformatics. Students must be 17 years old before June 15, 2022 to be eligible.

Last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the summer program was held virtually. While there has not been a final decision on whether to be virtual again this summer, we are hopeful to be back in person for the 2022 summer. There will be two question and answer sessions that your students may be interested in attending:

I would love the opportunity to discuss the program with you and your students, so please let me know if you would like more information. I have attached a flyer describing our high school summer program and would appreciate if you could distribute, or display, the handout in your school. We want to get the word out to students who may be interested and benefit from participation in the future. If you or any interested students would like to learn more about the program please feel free to email or call me. I would also be willing to speak to your students directly, if you think they may be interested.
