Dear OPR Families,

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Giving Fund supporting OPR families through the winter holidays and throughout the year. Additionally, the Thanksgiving donations were greatly appreciated. Our Giving Fund collection ends on Monday.

Please see below for the invitation to the OPR Holiday Sing-along. The evening event for families was a popular tradition prior to Covid and we are happy to be able to bring it back as another opportunity for OPR families to connect.

Holiday Card Contest

For more than 25 years, the Walpole elementary schools have partnered with Dedham Savings Bank and participated in their Holiday Card Contest. If students would like to participate in the contest, we are asking that this take place at home and possibly at indoor recess (if applicable).

Here are the details:

  • All cards should be on 8.5 by 11 inch white paper which will be provided at school.

  • On the back of the card, please put the student's name, school, and grade.

  • The cards need to be returned to school by Thursday, December 12th

Below are the generous prizes for each grade(district-wide) donated by the Dedham Savings Bank:

  • 1st Prize $100

  • 2nd Prize $50

  • 3rd Prize $25

Colder Weather

The cold winter weather is approaching and this is a friendly reminder to have all students wear the appropriate outdoor winter clothing. As long as the temperatures allow, we will continue to have students go outside for recess. It is extremely important for students to wear boots, hats, mittens/gloves, and winter coats on cold winter days.

Art with Ms. Kroll

Grade K:

Kindergarten artists have finally finished their incredible Line Monsters which can be also found on Artsonia. Students are now learning about the Element of Art: Shape and how there are two categories of shapes which are geometric and organic. Each artist will create a Shape Animal collage masterpiece using construction paper, scissors, and glue. Before students begin their masterpieces they will practice drawing geometric shapes which will make up their animals.

Grade 1:

Students are working on their Organic Shape Collage masterpieces which feature the Element of Art: Shape. First grade artists reviewed how there are geometric and organic shapes and looked at the differences between the two categories. The featured artist for this project is Henri Matisse. Students looked at collages by Matisse and discussed what they noticed or saw in each artwork. Each artist was asked to create an organic shape collage using construction paper, scissors, and glue. As an added challenge, students were encouraged to create “inside” and “outside” shapes which use positive and negative space.

Grade 2:

Students are working on their Shape Castle masterpieces which feature the Element of Art: Shape. Second grade artists reviewed how there are geometric and organic shapes and looked at the differences between the two categories. The featured artist for this project is Paul Klee. Students looked at paintings by Klee and discussed what they noticed or saw in each artwork. Each artist was asked to create an imaginative shape castle exterior using primarily geometric shapes. Students will use pencil, Sharpie, and colored pencils for this project.

Grade 3:

Students have begun learning about the Element of Art: Line and reviewed the various kinds of lines that can be used in artmaking. The featured artist for this project Wayne Thiebaud. Students looked at paintings by Thiebaud and shared any observations or connections they had to the work. Each artist will create an Ultimate Dessert with Line masterpiece using pencil, Sharpie, and colored pencils. Students were encouraged to think about ways they can make their desserts more extreme and over the top with lots of decoration.

Grade 4:

Students have started their practice of self portraits with the use of face mapping. This technique allows each artist to draw their facial features more realistically and proportionally. Students studied the art movement of Surrealism and looked at artworks by Frida Kahlo who is the featured artist for this project. Each artist will create their own Surrealist self portraits with pencils and watercolor pencils. These masterpieces will feature the fourth grade artists along with symbolic backgrounds that showcase a bit about who they are.

Grade 5:

Students have started studying Surrealism and looked at paintings from featured artists, Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. Fifth grade artists engaged in thoughtful conversations about what they noticed in each artwork and delved deeper into the possible meaning behind the symbolic imagery. The masterpieces will consist of Surrealist-style landscapes that depict imaginative and dreamlike worlds. Each artist will practice blending with oil pastels and use specific pastel techniques such as stippling, smudging, and scrumbling as this will be the selected art medium for the project.

Reading with Mrs. Driscoll & Mrs. Segal

With our first snow this week the timing is perfect for our winter Snowbowl Book Tournament . The tournament will begin next week. This year our theme is True Stories of Amazing Animals. Each week classes will hear books read aloud about animals that have had some fascinating experiences and journeys. Classes will vote on winners to make it to the next round. Be sure to ask your children what books they are listening to in class and which amazing animal stories are their favorites. We can’t wait to see which book will make it to the winner’s spot at the top of our snowman.

Across all grade levels students continue to grow students into stronger writers. Students are learning how to build upon their skills in narrative and expository writing, as well as critically respond to texts that they read. Our upper grades are working hard on responding to texts by making strong claims about what they read and supporting their claims with evidence from the text. They are learning how to explain the importance of the evidence they chose and how it proves their claim. During this process students are also learning how to structure their responses in a clear, organized manner so they are able to write a strong well supported essay. Keep an eye out for our Snowbowl Book Tournament winners at the end of January!
