Planned unexcused absences
Just a friendly reminder regarding our district's policy on schoolwork during planned unexcused absences, such as family vacations, competitive activities like sports tournaments, or arts performances. Please understand that teachers are not required to provide work before an unexcused absence, though they are often willing to help if they are able to and appreciate advance notice. Students should utilize Schoology as it provides a helpful guide and overview of class activities and assignments, and the student should plan to check it while they are out. Upon return, the student is responsible for checking in with teachers to create a plan for making up missed work, which is key to ensuring their smooth transition back to class. We appreciate your partnership in supporting your student's learning!

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Doherty Middle School will be closed this Monday, January 19. This holiday serves as an opportunity for our students and families to reflect on Dr. King’s vision of equality, justice, and the "Beloved Community." We encourage our Andover families to view this as a "day on" by engaging in local service or attending the town's 19th Annual MLK Day Celebration at the Andover Baptist Church from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We are especially proud to share that the Andover High School Chamber Choir will be performing at the event, providing an inspiring musical backdrop to this year's theme: "United We Stand — Divided We Fall." As we honor Dr. King’s legacy, we remain committed at Doherty to fostering an environment where every student is valued for the "content of their character." We look forward to seeing our students back on Tuesday, ready to lead with the kindness and integrity that define our school community.
7th Grade Science Projects.
Over the past several weeks, students on 7A and 7B have been working on their Human Impact Project, a science research project focused on how human activities negatively impact the environment. Students selected a topic of interest, conducted research using multiple sources, and organized their findings on a research poster. They also created detailed dioramas to visually represent their learning. In addition to identifying environmental problems, students were challenged to propose possible solutions and ways humans can reduce their impact. We are proud of the effort and dedication students put into their work and are excited to share it with families.

Chris Romulo
PAC sponsored Assembly for Students
We are pleased to announce that Chris Romulo will be visiting Doherty on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. He will lead two separate assemblies: one tailored for 7th and 8th-grade students, and another specifically for the 6th grade.
Addressing everything from self-doubt to peer pressure, Mr. Romulo equips students with the tools to stay true to themselves while remaining kind and respectful to those around them.
Where Grit Meets Growth
Chris Romulo is a resilience expert, speaker, and retired professional Muay Thai champion who helps individuals and teams bounce back stronger—inside and outside the ring.
With nearly three decades of experience, Chris has mastered the art of turning setbacks into comebacks. From surviving a life-threatening health scare to rebuilding his home and gym after a devastating hurricane, his journey proves that resilience isn’t born—it’s built.
Today, he teaches schools, colleges, and companies how to stay grounded under pressure and lead with grit, focus, and heart.
Korean Students will visit Doherty from January 26- February 4
Welcome to our International Guests!
Doherty Middle School is thrilled to welcome six visiting students from Korea, who will be joining us to immerse themselves in the authentic American middle school experience. To ensure they feel right at home, our visitors have been paired with a group of dedicated 8th-grade student volunteers who will serve as their guides and peers throughout their stay.
We are incredibly excited to showcase our vibrant community and share the many things that make our school such a wonderful place to learn and grow.
February 4- BRIDGING GENERATIONS: With Heroes of the Forgotten War

Fully charged computers to school everyday
Please remind your student(s)
Now that we’ve settled into the school year, we want to share a friendly reminder about student devices.
Students are expected to bring their fully charged computers to school every day. You can really help us with this by reminding your student to charge their computer every night. This simple routine makes a big difference in ensuring they are prepared for class each day.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your student's education.
News from the School Nurse
Counseling Corner
Supporting a middle schooler through stress requires a delicate balance of being a "safe harbor" while giving them the independence they crave. Start by validating their feelings rather than trying to fix them immediately; simply acknowledging that "it makes sense to feel overwhelmed right now" can lower their defenses more than a lecture ever could. Create a home environment that prioritizes low-pressure connection, such as going for a walk or driving in the car—activities where eye contact isn't forced often make it easier for teens to open up. Encourage them to find "flow" through tactile hobbies like drawing or sports, and help them break down massive projects into manageable chunks to prevent paralysis. Most importantly, model healthy stress management yourself; when they see you take a deep breath or step away from a screen after a long day, you're giving them a silent, powerful blueprint for their own resilience.

Who We Are & Stay Connected
“Who We Are”
Communication with our families is essential to the success and wellness of our students. To assist our families and help them connect with the appropriate staff who is best suited to answer questions, we have updated our “Who We Are” page on our website. The information will guide families to resources on how to reach staff with concerns and how to stay connected to news and events across the district.
