A Note from Ms. Martin
Pierce Families,
Two urgent items must be completed by TODAY:
RSVP in the Power School system. For current BPS students ONLY: You should have received an individual e-mail regarding updating and reviewing your child's contact and emergency information. Please complete the RSVP process as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding the RSVP process, or did not receive the e-mails, contact Rose Dorre at rdorre@birmingham.k12.mi.us. If your child is new to BPS - please disregard this.
Transportation Opt-In. Students will now need to pre-register for bus services. In order for students to access their regularly scheduled bus services, you will need to fill out the transportation questionnaire by August 18. If you do not input your information on this form, you will be not included in the transportation list in regards to getting a bus route. It is imperative that you fill out this form by August 18 in order to be included on a bus. This pertains to those students who will qualify for transportation based on their address.

Volunteering - Get Ahead of the Game!
When Entering the Building...
All visitors to the building (who will be leaving the front office) MUST bring their ID with them to sign in. This is a new requirement within all BPS schools. We will scan your ID and it will check on the sex offender registry. Then, once cleared, we will print a visitor nametag which must be worn and clearly visible. Thank you for helping us to make Pierce a safer environment for your child(ren)!
Volunteer Form (iChat)
If you plan to volunteer at Pierce this year, attend field trips, or come for special events, you should complete this volunteer form! Return to Carey Shields Larson at clarson@birmingham.k12.mi.us.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Pierce Elementary Arrival Procedures
Drop off lines are for independent drop off only. Please use the parking lot if you need to park or get out of your car. WHEN EXITING THE PARKING LOT ON TO EDGEWOOD, YOU MUST TURN RIGHT DURING DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP!
Please use the following locations for entrance each school day. Doors open at 8:43 and school begins at 8:49am.
Kindergarten: enter the Kindergarten doors located by the bus loop.
1st grade: enter the main entrance and walk to your locker.
2nd, 3rd and 4th grade: enter the playground doors.
5th grade: Line up along the wall by the flagpole and enter through the same doors as the kindergarten students using the special stairwell to get to the 5th grade hallway.
Pierce Elementary Dismissal Procedures
Kindergarten will begin dismissal at 3:45pm and meet their parents at the Flagpole area.
1st and 2nd grade will begin dismissal at 3:48 outside of the playground doors.
3rd and 4th grade will begin dismissal at 3:50 outside of the old main entrance on Pierce Street.
5th grade will begin dismissal at the playground doors at 3:50.
Pick up loops:
Due to supervision and safety concerns, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students are restricted from independently using the carline. **Families can coordinate an older sibling pick up plans with all teachers involved and the school Principal in mid-September. Older students will need to pick up their younger siblings outdoors and walk with them to the carline. Any unsafe behaviors that occur during this transition and/or waiting for a pick up, may result in ending the option for an older sibling pick up.
3rd - 5th grade parents can choose to use the pick-up loops and these students will be dismissed out the main entrance
3rd grade students use the Bird Ave Loop
4th and 5th grade students use the Edgewood Loop
Starting on September 11, older siblings may pick up 1st and 2nd grade students for carline dismissal. Please work with all teachers involved and the principal to make a plan. **This may not always be possible as class schedules may conflict with the plan. Additionally, if supervision or safety are a concern, this dismissal plan may not be an option.
WHEN EXITING THE PARKING LOT ON TO EDGEWOOD, YOU MUST TURN RIGHT DURING DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP!

Meet Shadow!
Pierce has been awarded Shadow, a registered therapy dog in training for the upcoming school year. Shadow is a part of Birmingham Public Schools' new Canine Comfort Crew. The future responsibility of Shadow is to provide emotional wellness support to staff, students and the educational community. Therefore we will be referring to Shadow as Pierce’s Support Dog.
Shadow is a black English Labrador Retriever with a very sweet and spunky personality. He is learning the skills necessary to support students in a school setting. Shadow will help students make good choices, promote happiness, and he will do his best to support those handling strong feelings. Shadow will be interacting with staff and students most every day as he becomes more comfortable with the new school environment.
A majority of Shadow’s time will be spent with his handlers, Ms. Prindle and Ms. Martin during his first year at school. He is still a young dog, so we are moving slowly with Shadow’s transition into school until he is fully acclimated.
We are excited to amplify the emotional wellness of the learning community. Our priority is to make sure all stakeholders feel safe and included in school. Please direct any questions or concerns regarding Shadow, Pierce's Support Dog, to Ms. Martin or the Canine Comfort Crew Liaison, Amy Palmer.
Pawsome Regards,
Kate Martin
