As we plan for events to round out the end of the year, remember that any visitors to our building during the school day must present a driver's license or photo ID at the front doors for entry and front desk to sign in. This includes end of year award ceremonies.

We hate having to turn family away from awards ceremonies and other family events during the school day, but student safety is our first priority.

KSA testing this week KSA testing this week

Our 3rd - 5th graders will take the KSA test next week. This is the end-of-year assessment from the state and we are excited to see our students' growth! We recently completed iReady testing and WOW the growth we have seen from individual students as they met their goals for the school year.

Although testing can be stressful, I want to emphasize that this is only a test. It only measures a small percentage of how our students have grown. As a content test, it can only tell us what students have committed to memory throughout the school year. It is not a test written by their classroom teacher, so sometimes the wording trips students up. The reading passages are not chosen by students, so they are often not engaging and don't relate to our students' lives. The writing test is geared to a made up audience, so it lacks authenticity that brings writing to life.

This test cannot measure how much our students have grown into their own person. It cannot measure their empathy, their compassion, their love for learning or their newly-discovered strengths. It will not measure their social growth, their collaboration skills, their self-awareness or self confidence. It cannot measure their creativity or their leadership abilities.

No matter the outcome of testing, we see all the ways that students have grown and are excited to be part of their journey to discover themselves. We want students to do their best - that is all we can ask. No matter the results, we are proud of each student and will continue to champion them and celebrate their growth here at school.

What is tested?

3rd grade: Reading, Math

4th grade: Reading, Math, Science

5th grade: Reading, Math, Social Studies, Editing & Mechanics, On Demand Writing

Cards vs Cats - Fundraising for Special Olympics Cards vs Cats - Fundraising for Special Olympics

zoom_out_map

BCPS is raising money to support Special Olympics. Special Olympics is a global sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and athletic competition in various sports. It's a movement that promotes inclusion, acceptance, and understanding by giving individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to participate in sports and experience the joy of competition.

When?

Between April 28th and May 21st, each school will collect money for Special Olympics through a Cats vs Cards money war.

How?

Students can use their money to vote for UL or UK. We will have collection buckets in the lobby of the school to collect money each morning.

Goal:

At the end of the fundraiser, money will be counted. During the last week of school, the principal of each school will wear the colors of the team with the most support (money) raised at their individual school. Will Mr. Mullins be wearing red or blue all week? Your donations decide!

When the money for all schools is collected and counted, Dr. Bacon (our superintendent) will wear the winning team's colors during the last week of school.
