Insurance Questions? Insurance Questions?

Do you ever have questions about insurance coverage for your child and family?

Where to start...

The Insurance Resource Center for Autism and Behavioral Health (IRC) offers FREE assistance. The IRC website shares:

  • Insurance is complicated. Navigating insurance for someone with a disability increases that complexity and can be overwhelming.
  • The IRC provides technical assistance to families, providers, clinicians, educators, and others.
  • The IRC can help with everything from basic information about coverage and eligibility, to navigating complex problems.
  • Examples:
    • Were you told your disabled child isn’t eligible for MassHealth because you make too much money or have other insurance?
    • Are you having difficulties finding a provider who takes your insurance?
    • Are you having trouble affording co-pays for treatments?
    • Did a provider advise you to drop private insurance in order to access behavioral treatments?
    • Did you receive a confusing letter from MassHealth?
    • The IRC can provide technical assistance and advice when coverage is changing – are you switching jobs?
    • Is your child transitioning to adulthood?
    • Do you have questions about Social Security affecting coverage?

You can reach the Center during business hours by phone at 774-455-4056 or anytime through email airc@umassmed.edu, or by submitting a form through the website.

Do you have MassHealth? My Ombudsman is a FREE support that can work with you, your healthcare providers, and MassHealth to help you access the benefits and services covered by your plan. My Ombudsman is independently operated by the Disability Policy Consortium (DPC) through a contract with MassHealth.

  • This includes helping members understand covered benefits, knowing your rights, and what to do if there is a problem.
  • You can reach My Ombudsman by phone at 855-781-9898 or email info@myombudsman.org.

Additional Resources

Private Insurance: Families can ask for additional support from insurance companies. These supports many include:

  • crisis support
  • case worker/social worker

Families can request the support of an ombudsman.

The Insurance Resource Center can help families with this. Services may vary by insurer.

Massachusetts Department of Insurance (DOI) DOI is the MA agency that protects insurance consumers. DOI can investigate and enforce MA laws/regulations related to insurance and respond to consumer questions and complaints.
