A Message from your Principal, Mrs. Katie Johnson A Message from your Principal, Mrs. Katie Johnson

As we enter into the month of September, we have begun collecting our baseline data. The data we collect will be used to make instructional decision. Our assessments aim to gather specific information about our learners. I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you information about some of the English Language Art Assessments Elizabeth Ide will be using to assess and monitor our student progress in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade.

Reading Growth Measure Foundational Literacy Assessment (FLA): The FLA is a fixed assessment that focuses on foundational literacy skills to include phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, phonics and word recognition (High Frequency Words, Letter Sound Correspondences, and Nonsense Word Decoding).

Aimsweb+: Aimsweb+ consists of a variety of measures, each taking approximately 1-3 minutes, designed to assess the basic reading skills that are good indicators of overall performance. The measures assessed at each grade level slightly vary, but skills include Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation, Letter Word Sounds Fluency, Word Reading Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency, Oral Reading Fluency, Reading Comprehension, and Vocabulary.

These assessments will be utilized to benchmark all of our students in the Fall, Winter and Spring. This information, in addition to classroom observations, will guide our decisions about what students need and will be shared with families in a timely manner. If you have specific questions about your child's progress and/or the assessments, please contact your child's teacher.

Respectfully,

Katie Johnson

Principal

Technology Update Technology Update

Technology is a part of all of our lives, even our youngest learners. We have been studying the impact of technology on our youth and the potential negative impacts resulting from over access, over usage, and misusage. In response, we are trying to find ways to limit the negative impact on our students. We will be monitoring screen time at school and only using the technology when needed. In addition, we have decided that iPads (K-1st Grade) and Chromebooks (2nd Grade) will remain at school this year. By keeping the technology at school, students are ensured to have a charged and working Ipad-Chromebook when needed. If you would like access to a school specific technology program for your child at home, you will be able to do so using a program called ClassLink. More details will be coming soon. Thank you for your support in ensuring our youngest learners are growing academically, socially, and emotionally.

Bus Expectations Bus Expectations

We want to remind you that even if your child doesn't ride the bus daily, it's crucial for all students to understand the expectations for bus safety. This knowledge is essential, especially for field trips and other occasions when bus transportation may be used.

While we have reviewed these expectations in school, please take the time to review the CCSD66 bus expectations with your child. This will help ensure their safety and a positive experience for all while riding the bus.

What is a SIP Day? What is a SIP Day?

August 28 - An Afternoon of Learning for our Teachers!

With direct support from HMH, our K-2 teachers, along with Special Education, Intervention, and English Language teachers, delved into the Science of Reading. We examined the critical role of foundational skills in developing fluent readers and explored effective Structured Literacy routines and resources. Teachers began planning to implement these strategies in their daily literacy blocks. This collaboration also allowed us to align classroom practices with intervention and support services, ensuring a cohesive approach to reading instruction.
