It's Application Season
Hello SOAR!
Seniors, this is an exciting time. Application season is here, and you do not have to navigate it alone.
Over the next several weeks, our counselors will be visiting AVID 12 classrooms to walk with you line by line through your college applications. From application details and deadlines to essays, PIQs, and submission requirements, we are here to help make the process feel clear and manageable.
Take your time, ask questions, and remember that every application is another step toward the future you are building. We are proud of the work you have done to get to this point, and we are excited to support you through what comes next.
One step at a time, Seniors. You’ve got this.
With a H.U.G.,

AVC Spring Registration opens Wednesday, November 4 at 9:00 AM.
Over the past several weeks, SOAR counselors have been visiting AVID classes to help students prepare for Spring registration. During these visits, students received grade-level guidance on registration, course planning, and important steps they should complete before registration opens.
Families can view the same presentations shared with students by visiting the SOAR Counseling Department website and selecting: Students → Counseling Presentations
You can also access the presentations directly here: View Counseling Presentations

Check their myAVC account balance.
Students should log in to myAVC and review their account balance. If the balance is $39 or less, please pay it now.Plan classes ahead of time.
Students should review the AVC Schedule of Classes and decide which courses they plan to register for. They should write down the CRN numbers for their preferred classes and have a few backup choices ready in case a class fills.Plan to be on campus on Wednesday, 11/4 at 9:00 AM.
If your student does not have a class at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, they should plan to be on campus and ready to register when registration opens. SOAR counselors will be available on campus during registration to help troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

September Family Wellness: Recognize and Respond – PART 2
Last week, we focused on creating space for conversations about mental health. This week, we’re continuing that conversation by helping families recognize when a student may need additional support and what to do when concerns arise.
Know Your Student & Notice Changes
Teenagers naturally experience changes in mood and behavior. What can be especially important is noticing significant, persistent, or concerning changes from what’s typical for your student, such as:
- Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they enjoy
- Significant changes in sleep, eating, mood, or school functioning
- Increased sadness, anxiety, irritability, anger, or hopelessness
- Talking about feeling trapped, hopeless, or like a burden
- Talking about self-harm, death, wanting to die, or suicide
One sign alone doesn’t necessarily mean a student is experiencing a crisis, but changes are an opportunity to check in.
If You’re Student Tells You They’re Struggling
- Stay calm and listen. Thank them for trusting you and take what they share seriously
- Ask about safety. If you’re concerned about suicide, it is okay to ask them directly: “Are you thinking about suicide?” Asking directly does not put the idea into someone’s head.
- Connect them with support. Reach out to an appropriate school mental health professional, healthcare provider, or mental health professional. Continue checking in even after your student begins receiving support.
If There Are Thoughts of Self-Harm or Suicide
Don’t dismiss or minimize what they are experiencing. Stay with them, seek professional support, and reduce access to potentially dangerous items. If you’re student is thinking about suicide, has a plan or access to a way to harm themselves, cannot stay safe or you are unsure about the level of danger, call or text 988 for immediate crisis support. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. The Behavioral Health Urgent Care Clinic (BHUCC) in Lancaster is also an additional resource families have if their student is experiencing suicidal thoughts. They can also help link families up with additional mental health support such as therapy.
Family Reminder
Students need to know that struggling does not make them a burden and asking for help does not make them weak. Our response when they reach out can help make it easier for them to reach out again. A response such as: “Thank you for telling me. I’m here with you, and we’re going to find the support you need” can go a long way.
Support is Available
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Hotline: Call or text 988 for free, confidential, 24/7 support for anyone experiencing emotional distress or a mental health/suicide crisis.
