STEM Spotlight with Mrs. Wight
The STEM Lab has been buzzing with energy this winter! In the STEM modules, elementary students explored Earth Sciences, while primary students focused on Forces in Nature, such as pushes, pulls, and gravity.
Students delved into weathering, erosion, and deposition. They learned that weathering involves breaking down rocks through wind, water, and ice. As part of a science investigation, we built an erosion model and used ice, water, and compressed air to erode soil. We also took a closer look at tectonic plates and seismology. Students understand the factors contributing to South Carolina's recent seismic activity. Primary students applied the design process to create and test vehicles capable of pushing or pulling rock loads. We also explored gravity by constructing apple towers inspired by Isaac Newton's story of apples falling from a tree.
GSFE will be represented by 29 fourth and fifth graders at the HCS Technology Fair. Team members have been hard at work for six weeks working on engineering robotics, animation, coding, and website design. The team, as well as the six coaches, are looking forward to attending the 17th annual Horry County Schools Technology Fair on April 1st in Myrtle Beach.
