A Message from Student Support

We are in the home-stretch of the school year! With that being said, weโ€™d like to continue

stressing the importance of being cognizant of our walkers to and from school and

remembering the school zone speed limit, especially during arrival and dismissal times.

Please be extra cautious when approaching the crosswalks located near all three buildings.

Our crossing guards are placed at each crosswalk to ensure the safety of our walkers.

May also focuses on mental health awareness, youth traffic safety, and physical fitness

and sports safety. If any students experience anxiety or stress while preparing for

upcoming exams, the staff and school resource officers here at Akron Central School are

always available to guide, support, and offer resources to help our students succeed.

Additionally, regarding youth traffic safety, there are many local, in-person and online

safe-driving courses offered for new drivers that not only better-prepare them for the

road, but also offer discounts on insurance!

Lastly, when we think about โ€œsafetyโ€ while performing in sports and other types of training

or exercise, it is important to stay hydrated with water or electrolytes to prevent

dehydration or other heat-related injuries and emergencies. Macro- and micro-nutrient-

dense foods are also imperative to overall health, especially during the warmer months of

the year! Some sports injuries are unavoidable, but we can reduce the risk of preventative

injuries and chronic illnesses by living a healthy, active lifestyle. The Office of Disease

Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) states, โ€œFor school-aged children, sports

participation can lead to better focus in class, higher grades, improved self-esteem, and a

much-needed sense of social connection.โ€

Thank you for being a part of our ACS family. Go Tigers!

A Message from the SRO

May is often associated with warmer weather, flowers blooming and more outdoor activities. May is also Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, among several other awareness campaigns and special dates.

Global Youth Traffic Safety Month is meant to promote safe teen driving behavior.

  • The number one cause of accidents is distracted driving, which can be many things from being on the phone, talking to other passengers in the vehicle or daydreaming.
  • Some ways to help prevent accidents and injuries are wearing your seatbelt, obeying the traffic laws such as the speed limit and not being on your phone and yielding to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • When riding a bicycle, make sure to have lights on the front and back of the bike, wear a helmet and ride with traffic in a designated bike lane or shoulder of the roadway. Ride with traffic, not against traffic. Sidewalk riding is only permitted for anyone under the age of 12 or if the bicycle tires are less than 26 inches.
  • When walking, make sure to cross at designated crosswalks and wait for a signal. If there is no signal, wait until traffic is clear. Always walk facing traffic and avoid talking on the phone or using headphones when crossing to avoid distractions.
  • Teens are involved in approximately 3 times more fatal accidents than other drivers in the U.S. This is likely due to their inexperience and distraction.
  • As always, communicate with your kiddos, whether they are driving, riding their bike, or walking. The nicer weather brings more traffic on foot and on wheels.

Stay safe and Go Tigers.
