UW Whitewater King Chavez Leadership Team UW Whitewater King Chavez Leadership Team

UW- Whitewater students came to Lincoln to help prepare and welcome students back to school after the summer break. The students worked cleaning the gym, making sketchbooks, laminating, cutting and sorting to help the teachers prepare for students. The university students loved the opportunity to give back and serve children.

Throughout the school year these students will be class buddies with our second graders. They will exchange letters throughout the school year, the UW students will come to Lincoln mid way through the year and at the end of the year our students will be able to go to campus and have activities there with the King Chavez students.

5th Grade is Learning Chemistry 5th Grade is Learning Chemistry

The fifth grade just finished a unit on chemistry. We studied chemical reactions and looked at different properties of matter. We hope that families didn't run out of vinegar and baking soda with students recreating and extending some of the experiments at home!

Top Secret Party...Shhhhhhh Top Secret Party...Shhhhhhh

The fifth grade classes read a book written by Jon Gardiner called Top Secret. This story is about Allen Brewster, a child who discovers the secret of human photosynthesis and who is excited to share his idea with the government because he knows that this discovery can end hunger in the world. He was stunned to learn that the government does not support his plan because of the effect that such a discovery would have on the economy. The government takes the secret and forces Allen to promise not to share the secret with anyone ...

Students wrote a sequel (continuation) of this story and shared these stories with classmates during a Top Secret Party. A big thank you to the families who sent green or plant based treats to help with the photosynthesis theme!

7 Mindsets- Everything Is Possible 7 Mindsets- Everything Is Possible

Expanding Student Expectations

The Everything Is Possible Mindset teaches that we are all capable of living extraordinary lives. Students learn that everything which exists today was once just an idea until someone believed it was possible and took the actions to make it into reality. This is true with our lives as well – they become, in many ways, whatever we expect them to be. Throughout the lessons for this mindset, we work with students to help them understand the incredible promise of their lives, and to envision extraordinary happiness, meaning and success on their own terms. We seek to instill the belief that their goals are possible, and to foster the courage, discipline and persistence to act on achieving their dreams.

Family Teacher Partnership (FTP) News and Notes Family Teacher Partnership (FTP) News and Notes

Curriculum and Instruction News Curriculum and Instruction News

To ensure that students receive support in areas where they may be struggling, either in math or in literacy, WUSD utilizes short assessments to identify students’ unique needs and strengths. For literacy, we utilize the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) screener with all learners K-5. DIBELS includes short subtests to measure learners’ proficiency in literacy skills according to their grade level. For math, we are excited to share that this school year, our district is utilizing a math screener and practice tool called Happy Numbers for students in Grades K-5.

Happy Numbers includes a short diagnostic screener to identify student needs and strengths, and provides individualized learning pathways, tracking student progress throughout the year. Happy Numbers will be used as an instructional tool to supplement our existing Bridges Mathematics curriculum, primarily during small group time. The data from Happy Numbers, alongside Bridges Mathematics assessments, will help us target areas where students need more practice and support so that we may provide learners with what they need to achieve math proficiency. With the data from Happy Numbers and Bridges Mathematics assessments equipping teachers with identified areas for growth and strengths of learners, the NWEA MAP will not be administered this school year. If you would like more information about Happy Numbers, please click here to find resources online.

In addition to utilizing math and literacy screeners to identify needs, we have built math intervention time and literacy intervention time into every schedule to ensure we are meeting the needs of our learners. With these structures and resources in place, we aim to improve math and literacy proficiency through data-driven decisions at all levels of instruction.

Thank you for your continued support!
