School Safety Feedback Session: Next Steps for Oshkosh North
Dear North Families,
Following last month’s safety incident here at Oshkosh North High School, we know firsthand how deeply safety, communication, and emotional well-being impact our students, staff, and families.
As our school community continues to process what happened, we want to ensure you have a dedicated space to share your thoughts, ask questions, and offer feedback on potential safety enhancements.
We invite you to join us for a Parent and Community Safety Feedback Session:
Date: Thursday, November 12th
Time: 5:00 – 6:00 PM
Location: Media Center
During this session, we will gather feedback on three specific measures currently under evaluation across the district:
1) The use of metal detectors and security wands in schools
2) Clear backpacks
3) Requiring the use of lockers - not allowing backpacks and coats in classrooms
How Your Feedback Will Be Used
This meeting is designed to listen to our North families - your perspectives, questions, and ideas. I will take our collective feedback directly to the OASD Executive Team and Emergency Preparedness Collaborative Operations Team (EPCOT), alongside input being gathered from our staff and students, to inform their ongoing evaluation of district safety policies.
Thank you for your voice, your partnership, and your continued care for our Oshkosh North community.
Attendance Line Information for Families
If your student will be absent from school or needs to leave for an appointment, please call our attendance line at (920) 424-0288 to report the absence or early dismissal.
Please remember to leave a voicemail if you are unable to speak with someone directly. Due to the high volume of calls, our attendance secretary checks voicemails promptly to ensure student passes can be prepared and attendance records are updated accordingly.
When leaving a voicemail, please include the following information:
Your first and last name
Your student's legal first and last name
Your student's grade level
Whether your student will be returning to school that day
We understand that unexpected situations and emergencies arise. However, if your student needs to leave for an appointment, we kindly ask that you call as early in the morning as possible. This allows us time to prepare your student's pass so they can leave class at the requested time.
When we receive last-minute calls, we may need to contact the classroom directly to dismiss your student. Calling ahead helps us minimize classroom interruptions and allows our teachers to focus on instruction.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us keep our attendance procedures running smoothly!
Trusted Adult Survey
On Monday, October 19th, in homeroom students will be taking he Trusted Adult Survey. Click the button below to see the goals for taking this survey.
News Worth Repeating
Parent Advisory Information
Dear North Community,
While our recent safety incident prevented us from hosting our scheduled Parent Advisory meeting, we want to keep you informed on our school goals and celebrate our students' strong start to the semester.
A Heartfelt Thank You & Homecoming Recap
Thank you to our entire community for supporting a smooth, positive return to school following the incident. Homecoming was a fantastic celebration of school spirit—from Excel activities to the parade, football game, and dance, our students modeled North Pride through our I.S.E.E. values every step of the way.
Key Priorities for the School Year
Consistent Grading Practices: All staff are using standardized gradebook categories and percentages (except in dual-credit courses) so families experience a clear, consistent assessment system across classes.
Enhanced Family Communication: We are committing to the district's standardized newsletter format to make news and resources easier for guardians to navigate.
Proactive Behavioral Supports: Using our I.S.E.E. Matrix (Integrity, Safety, Engagement, Excellence), our staff spent September reteaching core expectations to ensure a safe, supportive environment for everyone.
Our next Parent Advisory meeting will be held on November 12th in the media center from 5:00-6:00pm. We welcome all parents and guardians to attend! Please take a moment to share any initial thoughts or questions using [our online feedback form].
ACT and PreACT Prep
As we move into October, it is never too early for high school students to begin preparing for the ACT and PreACT exams. Establishing a consistent and structured test preparation routine early in the school year builds familiarity with the exam format, reduces test-day anxiety, and significantly improves overall confidence and performance.

Building Academic Momentum & School Safety
As we dive deeper into the school year, our focus at Oshkosh North remains on creating a safe, supportive, and academically focused environment for every student.
Behavioral Focus & September Data
Looking back at our September data, our top three behavioral referral categories centered on:
Technology / Cell Phone Policy
Chronic Tardiness
Unauthorized Location: Being in an unassigned area without permission. Please note: Staying in assigned areas is a critical safety priority, as staff must know where all students are located at all times.
The Big Picture: Despite these focus areas, 92.6% of our student body received one or zero referrals for the entire month! Thank you to our students and families for keeping expectations high—let’s keep this great momentum going!
Academic Progress & Student Engagement
With courses now in full swing, establishing consistent daily study habits—rather than relying on last-minute cramming—is essential for long-term success. Here is how you can support your student at home:
Check Canvas Together: The next few weeks are critical. This is often when late assignments begin to accumulate, but there is still time for students to submit missing work and recover! Please take a few minutes to review Canvas with your student to track their current grades and progress.
Encourage Self-Advocacy: If your student is feeling overwhelmed or falling behind, encourage them to connect directly with their teachers during Excel. Learning to advocate for their own learning needs is one of the most valuable habits a high schooler can build.
Get Connected: Beyond academics, ask your student what clubs, sports, or activities they are involved in at North. Staying connected to school activities is one of the best ways to build community and make the high school experience meaningful!
Academic Achievement & Co-Curricular Attendance Standards
Consistent daily attendance serves as the foundation for student academic mastery and high-level achievement. To ensure our student-athletes and co-curricular participants maintain optimal alignment between academic performance and extracurricular engagement, the following attendance mandates are strictly enforced. As codified within the official Student Co-Curriculur Handbook:
ATTENDANCE: OASD encourages all students to strive for perfect attendance, emphasizing that regular attendance is essential to the pursuit of excellence.
To be eligible to practice, compete, or perform, a student must be present for all scheduled classes on the day of the event.
If a student is unexcused absent for any part of the school day, they are strictly prohibited from participating in practices, competitions, or performances that day.
If a student is excused by a parent due to illness and becomes well enough to attend school by 1pm that day they are allowed to participate that evening.
A student who misses class may still participate only if the absence is pre-approved or cleared by school administration or the Activities Director. Valid examples of excused absences include:
Medical, dental, or healthcare appointments.
Attendance at a funeral.
School-sanctioned activities related to a classroom grade (e.g., field trips).
Other emergency situations approved at the discretion of the administration.
Operational Reminder & Policy Implementation Timeline
Participation Policy Enforcement: Please be reminded that student-participants with unexcused absences will be rendered ineligible for co-curricular participation, including all practices, competitions, and scheduled performances on that date.
Absence Reporting Protocols: Guardians must formally record any student absence prior to the deadline using either the Infinite Campus portal or by directly contacting the Attendance Office.
Effective Implementation Date: This administrative expectation will be strictly enforced building-wide beginning for winter practices/events.
Administrative Protocol for Athletic Coaches & Extra-Curricular Advisors
A daily attendance report will be generated and distributed electronically to all coaching personnel and activity advisors. It remains the direct professional responsibility of each coach and advisor to review this roster prior to any scheduled event, verifying that all participating student-athletes were in full compliance with daily class attendance mandates before granting authorization for practice, competition, performance or participation.
