Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, the unofficial kickoff to summer, a time that always feels very distant when we start a school year, but quickly, here we are. For anyone who has lost a loved one while serving our country, we thank them for their service and remember and honor them this weekend.

On Friday, our first-grade classes took their field trip to the Cape May Zoo. The weather was perfect, and the kids had a fun day with their classmates and loved ones. Also, throughout the week, our third-grade classes have been taking turns going on their field trips to the Cape May Nature Reserve. A big thank you to our Parents' Club for sponsoring every grade level's field trip. It is always a great opportunity for our students to end the year with a fun and educational experience outside of our school walls.

With only 17 days of school left, we have a lot to fit in in a short amount of time. One of the most exciting events coming up is our school's biggest fundraiser of the year, the Boosterthon. There is more information located below. You certainly do not need to contribute to this event, but any donations from friends and family go directly to supporting extra activities and incentives for our students throughout the school year. The culminating event for the fundraiser will be our "Fun Run" on June 9th. Spectators will be permitted to attend and more details on times, etc. will be sent out next week.

I wish you all a fun, safe, and relaxing three-day weekend. I hope everyone comes back refreshed and recharged for the home stretch!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Casumpang

Principal

French with Fernwood!

On Monday, May 22nd the Fernwood Avenue Middle School French students came to Slaybaugh for a "Snacks and Storytime" program in the Slaybaugh Elementary Library.

Several classes participated in the event which was sponsored by the teachers and staff of the Egg Harbor Township Education Association and organized by Kelli Baird, French teacher from Fernwood Avenue Middle School.

Students enjoyed listening to stories read to them in French by the students in Madame Baird's French classes while also learning some French words and phrases. After that, they had fun making a craft together.

It was a wonderful program enjoyed by all!

(Pictured below is Ms. Pellegrini's Second Grade class enjoying the event)

More French with Fernwood!

On Monday morning Mrs. Ebert's Kindergarten class enjoyed "Storytime and Snacks" with 7th and 8th grade Honors French students from Mrs. Kelli Baird's classes. They read us children's books in French, taught us French words from the stories and showed us how to make fun crafts to go with each story. Last, our middle school "teachers" gave the class a yummy candy treat for being good learners. THANK YOU and THREE CHEERS to Mrs. Baird and her Fernwood Middle School Honors French students!!!

Watch Them Grow!

Mrs. Ebert's Kindergarten class has a busy Gardening Team this spring. They've planted curly parsley and dill plants, also carrot seeds all to attract Swallowtail butterflies. On Thursday they watered what was already planted in their garden bed, and then added zinnia seeds to provide flowers and nectar for pollinators such as bees and butterflies that will visit the school garden this summer. It's fun learning to be nature helpers!

Writing a letter to the Librarian

The wild adventures continued when Mrs. Robertson's class brought the lesson to the Library! After reading Can I Bring Woolly to the Library, Ms. Reeder by Lois G. Grambling in their classroom, they wrote a persuasive paragraph asking Mrs. DeNaples if they could bring an animal of their choice to the library. They shared them with Mrs. DeNaples and eachother during library class and they were VERY persuasive. You just might see an animal or two visit and help if it is up to the students!

Kick back, relax & read!

Finally, students from Mrs. Ogborn's class stopped by to check out some books and take some time to relax and read! Happy Reading!

Reading and Sharing with Mrs. DeNaples!

It's been all about animals of all types in the Library this month! Kindergarteners learned about the importance of sharing when they read It's Mine by Leo Lionni. They created frog puppets to remember the story. Here is Mrs. Mortara's class showing off their puppets.

Mrs. DeNaples' Says, "Listen to Your Parents"

First graders read The Biggest House in the World by Leo Lionni and learned the importance of listening to their parents. They also created snail puppets to recreate the story. Here is Mrs. Sheeran's & Mrs. Burnett's class, showing off their snail puppets!

Stepping out with Nature!

This week Mrs. Bernardino and Mrs. Ungerer’s classes went to the ACUA and the Cape May Nature Reserve. Both trips we exciting, informative and full of surprises. We had the best time!

Our class (Russnak/Sullivan), along with Mrs. Gabriel's class, took a trip to the ACUA Environmental Park and water treatment facility. The children learned so much about how when we throw things away, they have to actually GO somewhere. They got to see (and smell) this firsthand and it was a great experience! We even got some park time in and had a great day!
