Outward Bound

Two Year 12 students, Quaid Crawford and Ben Barclay were lucky to be chosen to attend Outward Bound. Outward Bound is an organisation that sets outdoor challenges and adventures that help people reach their full potential by completing the challenges.

Students take responsibility over the challenge ahead of them. It could be leading the way on an expedition or managing their team to complete a kayak journey. The focus lies in building transferrable skills and attitudes that remain forever.

Both Quaid and Ben thoroughly enjoyed the experience and their full reports will be published in the School Magazine - "The Heretaungan" at the end of the year. But here are a few things they experienced on the 21 day course.

It's held in Anakiwa on the South Island. The participants are divided into specially named and numbered groups. There are many challenges on the journey some of which include: white water kayaking, bush training skills, navigation, sailing, rowing, climbing and a three day solo expedition.

Both students learned how to work as part of a team, the importance of service and compassion, how to be a role model and inspire others. Traits that will be invaluable to anyone in years to come.

STAR Defensive Driving

What is the STAR Programme?

STAR is designed to support a coherent Vocational Pathways programme by enabling schools to form partnerships with tertiary education providers and employers to provide vocational education and work experience.

An outside provider comes into school to tutor selected students in Defensive Driving.

A Defensive Driving Course gives students the skills, knowledge and confidence to be a smarter and safer driver. They learn important defensive driving skills, such as assessing and identifying hazards, so they can reduce the risk of being in a crash.

Leadership Course

In the last week of Term 3 selected students from Year 12 underwent leadership training as part of the prefect candidate selection process. They learnt from leaders within our community on the diverse nature of leadership, publicly spoke to senior management and their peers on what leadership means, and completed a small group planning and presentation of a problem and solutions to these within HBHS. The next step in the process is for a smaller group of students to be invited to a prefect camp in the second week of the school holidays (October 14-15).

1st XI Football - Champions

The Hastings Boys' High School First XI Football Team won the HBSS Division One League for the second year in a row. Finishing on equal points with HNHS, we needed 6 goals to win the league on goal difference for our last game against St. John's. The team won the game convincingly 8-0 with one of our best games of the season to get the job done. This was a fantastic end to another Covid disrupted season and an appropriate send off to our nine Year 13's who are all either going to university or beginning their careers next year. A special thanks to Grant Hastings who has taken these players from Year 9 and has brought them through to be great players but most importantly good people.

If you see any of these lads around give them a pat on the back.
