The Minutemen were a select group of colonial militia members during the American Revolution, known for their ability to be ready for battle at a minute's notice. These highly mobile, rapidly deployable forces played a crucial role in the early stages of the war, particularly in battles such as Lexington and Concord in 1775.
The National Guard, established in 1636 as the militia of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, is the direct descendant of these early Minutemen. Today, the National Guard serves both state and federal governments, providing a versatile force for domestic emergencies and overseas missions. The spirit of the Minutemen lives on in the National Guard's commitment to readiness and rapid response, whether it's for natural disasters, civil disturbances, or military operations abroad.
This enduring legacy highlights the National Guard's unique role in American history and its continued importance in national defense.
Why the National Guard?
