Eagle News
SME newsletter for families and the community
Dear Families,
As we look ahead to the 2025-2026 school year, we’re excited to share some important changes to the way we deliver our preschool programs across the district. After thoughtful consideration and planning, we will be transitioning to a new model where preschool classes will be offered at four central “hub” schools instead of at every school site. Six Mile Elementary will be one of those sites!
All of our current 3K will be offered a spot in this program automatically.

Registration begins January 13.
If you have questions, please call 864-397-2400.
Warm regards,
Melissa Terry
Big thanks to the CRO for their continued support!
We are receiving $50,000 from the CRO to renew and add to our outdoor spaces. What will we have?
*A reading courtyard with hammocks, chair swings, and chairs to read outside. Also, a door from the library to the courtyard will be added so students can go outside and read from the media center.
*Outdoor classroom space like the one pictured. This will be outside of fifth grade classrooms toward the main entrance.
*An expanded gardening area with the greenhouse and raised beds outside where the secret garden has been. Part of this will be paved - thanks to Metrocon!
*A new outdoor eating area under the trees by the side lot for classes to use for eating or for outdoor learning.
*An outdoor learning area outside of third grade classrooms with doors added going out to the outdoor space.
A big thank you to Michael Land for picnic tables, the families who helped with putting the greenhouse together, our Quest students who put the raised beds together, our students who planted the many gardens around the school, and the PTO for the continued monetary support! Also big thanks to Lauren Fox who has helped coordinate and organize this project!
Building Character at SME
Each month at Six Mile Elementary, we focus on different character traits and talk about ways to show those traits to others. We discuss the trait in morning meeting in our classrooms. We spotlight the trait on the school news show. Mrs. Orr, our guidance counselor, goes into classrooms and does special lessons with the trait. At the end of each month, we have a Best of the Nest party to honor those students who "shine" in that area.
In December, our core essential character trait is RESILIENCE.
RESILIENCE is getting back up when something gets you down.
Absence Notes
If your student is absent, you have three days to send a note stating the reason for their absence before it is counted unexcused. You can send a handwritten note or you can email Stephanie Merck at stephaniemerck@pickens.k12.sc.us. You can also email your child's teacher.
When students have accumulated 3 absences in a row without a note, Mrs. Plyler will have to schedule a meeting for an Attendance Conference. Please make sure to get your note in so that this does not happen.
