York High SchoolWeekly MemoSome thoughts for the starting school year

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are having a great week. What beautiful weather we had earlier this week -- it shows that spring is coming!

Congratulations to our CLASS B STATE CHAMPION Boys Hockey Team! They beat Hampden Academy 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. It was a fun season, and we are so very proud of them!

York Robotics wrapped up its competition season on Saturday, March 7th with the Maine State VEX Championship.

Our students began designing, building, and coding their robots back in September, then competed in five Maine qualifying tournaments from November through February against many of the state’s 110 registered VEX teams. By the end of the season, after many design and code iterations, all five of our high school teams had strong performances at the state championship.

At the end of qualifying matches, two York teams ranked in the top 10:

  • Team 5156G Bagel Bytes (Ned Spaulding, Isaac Wheeler, Ben Cipolletti, Gabe Leblanc)
  • Team 5156B Sacabambaspis (Tegan Witham, Zac Pawlendzio, James Adler, Peter Blaisdell).

During elimination matches, we had three teams advance to the quarter finals:

  • Team 5156B Sacabambaspis,
  • 5156E Snap. Crackle. Bot (Tim Eager, Willow Staley, Andrew Meader, Cooper Woods)
  • Team 5156H Bay Harbor Builders (Jake Pasciuto, Omar Bloomstein, Graeme Loveland, Owen Summers).

Yesterday, we had our first Juniors & Seniors ELO Career Fair, "From Mt. A to the Ocean: How Water Moves Through Our Community". Visitors from the York Water District, York Sewer District, and Mt. Agamenticus were here to:

  1. share the work they do to keep our water and environment clean.
  2. create some unique learning activities for students to watch and participate in,
  3. talk about potential career opportunities for students.

The career paths represented in both districts are diverse: trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC), engineering, law/politics, lab sciences (biology, chemistry), finance/accounting, HR, and administration/leadership.

It was a great opportunity to see what some of these career paths can look like, and to network and make some potential contacts. Thank you, Ms. Pinette, for organizing such a fun and informative event.
