Holton Families:

As we move closer to Spring Break, I would like to challenge us to have limited screen-time vacation. At school, our students spend a fair amount of time on their laptops navigating Schoology and other curriculum related material. In addition, many of our children also spend time on their phones or playing video games. For me, I fall into both categories: I use my laptop most of the day for school related work, and I certainly use my phone or other technologies in my personal time. We don't have to do deep research to find that limiting screen time is a good habit to get into. With a weeklong break on the horizon, this could be a good time to set up boundaries for your child when it comes to technology and screen time. Set a goal with your child that is reasonable and help them monitor it. Taking a break from school and especially screen time is a healthy endeavor. Thank you for your consideration.

Unfortunately, we missed our last school dance due to weather-related conflicts. However, our next dance is scheduled for Friday, March 20th from 3:30pm-5:30pm. Our dances are organized, supervised, and safe events for our students to have fun with their peers. Please remember that pick up time is 5:30pm or earlier in the bus lot or in front of the building. We do allow students to use our phones or use their cell phone to contact you. We also have them leave their coats and materials in their lockers during the dance. We open up the building at the end of the dance for them to retrieve their things. We also offer concessions at the dance with a variety of food and drinks. All proceeds go to our PBIS committee, and 100% of the proceeds go back to the students and the building.

Thank you for your support,

Mr. Schara

Holton Hawks-

Welcome to March! A warm January and no snow on the ground has the students thinking that summer is near. As we know, that is not exactly the case. We still have at least 25% of the school year ahead. Encourage your student to continue to follow expectations. This will allow everyone a chance to finish the year strong!

With that in mind, the days are getting longer, and the temperatures are inching higher. Of course, this can only mean one thing—MUD. During this sloppy, messy time of year, we still have our outside Movement Break, but we try to limit it to activities that only take place on cement (Gagaball, Basketball, 4-Square, Walking Path, etc.). Unfortunately, sometimes it seems that herding cats is easier than getting students to stay out of the mud. The constant announcements and reminders to stay on the sidewalk frequently fall on deaf ears. Inevitably, every day we have several students that end up taking a fall and covering themselves in mud. Regrettably, the student then has to spend the rest of the day wet and muddy. We do not allow students into the building to clean up or to get a change of clothes if they fall. Please remind your child to follow expectations and to stay on the sidewalk or cement to prevent any accidental slipping. We appreciate your assistance with this.

I hope your child told you about our PBIS Celebration this month. Each team played Bingo this month. For each team, the students gathered in their FTLAs and participated in several intense games of Bingo. We had numerous students take home some nice prices. It really is amazing to see how focused the children become when the game is on. They are laser focused on each number. The tension is palpable. When someone else yells out, “Bingo!” the devastation is real. It is a remarkable experience to watch over 100 students in one small area, that attentive.

We look forward to next month’s celebration. In March, we will be taking our annual trip to the Austin Packer Wescott Field Dome. There, the students will have the chance to play football, soccer, kickball, volleyball, frisbee, gymnastics, or dozens of different activities. Stay tuned to hear all about it.

Another exciting event planned for March is our next Holton dance. Mother Nature chose to cancel our last dance in January. The thrill for this one is enormous! The students simply cannot wait. More information will be out soon!

At IJ Holton, we encourage our students to be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and to Do Their Best! If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please email me david.brown@austin.k12.mn.us or call me at 460-1525. Bring on spring!

School Closing/Delays

PARENTS, BE PREPARED FOR BAD WEATHER!

If conditions look unfavorable, check your local news or listen to the radio. If you don’t have local news channels on your television, you can visit the following stations online: KAAL, KTTC, and KIMT or check the school website. https://www.austin.k12.mn.us/

The best way to receive official communications from Austin Public Schools is by signing up for the Parent Portal. If you haven’t done so yet, we strongly encourage you to register. This is the primary method our schools use to communicate and send notifications about closures, delays, or early dismissals and all other communications, grades, etc.

Important: Please refrain from calling the school, especially in the event of a possibility of an early dismissal. Notifications regarding school closings will be sent to you at the same time they are received by our office staff.

In the event of a closure/delay we will put a notice on our doors.

⛄⛅⚡With Cold weather here keep in mind that our doors do not open until 7:45. Staff are not expected to be here until 5 minutes prior to students' arrival. Do not drop off your child or send them early unless they are dressed for appropriate weather conditions. and are prepared to wait outside.

Planning Ahead for Student Appointments

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We kindly ask that you plan ahead when scheduling appointments for your child during the school day. To help us ensure a smooth and timely dismissal, please notify the office in advance and arrive with enough time to allow for your child to be called from class.

Your cooperation helps minimize disruptions to learning and ensures your child is ready when you arrive. Thank you for your continued support!

📞 Keep Emergency Contacts Up to Date!

To help us ensure your child’s safety, please take a moment to review and update your emergency contact information. If your phone number, address, or emergency contacts have changed recently, let us know as soon as possible. Accurate contact details help us reach you quickly in case of illness, injury, or other urgent situations.

You can update your information by logging into the parent portal.

Thank you for helping us keep our records current!

***LOST AND FOUND

Please remind your child to check the lost and found area. All items will be disposed of during spring break. We get overcrowded and we lack space. We remind kids frequently to check the lost and found and instead of it downsizing it gets bigger, we don't have the space, so items get disposed of during our holiday or extended breaks.

Warm regards,

IJH Office Staff

Message From the Counselors Message From the Counselors

Dear IJ and Ellis parents, guardians, and students,

Spring Break Is Here — Let’s Get Outside!

Spring break is the perfect time for middle schoolers to unplug, explore, and soak up some fresh air. With longer days and warmer weather, there are so many fun ways to get outside and stay active. Here are a few exciting ideas to inspire your family this week!

Backyard Adventure Day

Turn your backyard (or a local park) into an adventure zone! Set up an obstacle course, host a scavenger hunt, or build a simple fort using branches and blankets. Add a nature bingo challenge to keep kids curious about the world around them.

Neighborhood Exploration

Encourage kids to hop on their bikes or scooters and map out a safe neighborhood route. Challenge them to find five signs of spring — blooming flowers, buzzing bees, birds building nests, and more!

Hit the Trails

Explore a nearby hiking path or nature preserve. Many state and local parks also offer kid-friendly trails perfect for elementary and middle schoolers.

Start a Mini Garden

Spring is planting season! Give kids their own small garden plot or container pots. Easy starters like sunflowers, cherry tomatoes, and herbs grow quickly and keep kids engaged.

Picnic & Park Playdate

Pack lunch and head to a neighborhood park. Bring a frisbee, soccer ball, or kite for extra fun.

Sidewalk Chalk & Outdoor Art

Host a driveway art show! Create murals, design a hopscotch course, or try nature painting using leaves and flowers as brushes.

A Quick Reminder: On-Time Matters!

As we enjoy spring break fun, it’s also a great time to reset routines for a strong return to school. Getting your student to school on time each day is more important than many realize. Arriving late can mean missing key instructions, social connection time, and important learning moments that set the tone for the day.

Helpful tips for smoother mornings:

  • Set a consistent bedtime (even during break!)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
  • Create a simple morning checklist
  • Allow a few extra minutes for unexpected delays

Being on time builds responsibility, reduces stress, and helps students feel confident and ready to learn from the very first bell.

Wishing your family a refreshing, active spring break and a smooth transition back to school!

IJ Holton Families,

On Thursday, 2/19 our BARR Coach visited IJ Holton for the third time this year. She visited both a 5th grade and a 6th grade classroom for the I-Time lessons. She saw students who were engaged in their learning, working collaboratively with their peers, and thinking deeply about the lessons. She also sat in on a Small Block meeting and Community Connect meeting. During these meetings, she witnessed adults taking part in solution-focused conversations about students offering suggestions as well as listening to their peers as decisions were made about what next steps should be.
Karen Dunbar, IJ Holton & Ellis BARR Coordinator

BARR Strategies

Focus on the whole student.
Provide professional development for teachers, counselors, and administration.
Use BARR’s U-Time Curriculum to foster a climate for learning.
Create a cohort of students.
Hold regular meetings of the cohort teacher teams.
Conduct community connect meetings.
Engage families in student learning.
Engage administrators.

Review of U-Time Sessions in February

2/5/26
Grade 5 Be Comfortable in Your Own Boots Students discussed how being confident in yourself takes away the power of bullying behaviors. They read the story Wierd! A Story about Dealing with Bullying in Schools by Erin Frankel. Then, they decorated a pair of boots on a handout in a way that was unique and made them feel happy and strong.

Grade 6 Lollipop Moments Students learned that simple interactions affect others and that compliments & appreciation help to grow a relationship. They watched a TED Talk by Drew Dudley called Everyday Leadership. Then, they wrote a note (with a lollipop attached) expressing gratitude to a person who has had a positive effect on them.

2/12/26

Grade 5 Stand Up Students discussed and practiced the skills needed to be an upstander. They read the story Zach Stands Up by William Mulcahy. Then, they practiced being an upstander by participating in role plays.

Grade 6 Positive Self-Talk Students recognized their strengths through self-reflection. They wrote down 3 things that they are good at. Then, they wrote about 4 different experiences: being creative, a good friend, a problem-solver, and talented.

2/19/26

Grade 5 I’m That Too Students shared 10 of their individual strengths with the rest of the classroom community by creatively completing a handout using words, drawings, and color. They read the book Be You! By Peter H. Reynolds.

Grade 6 The Power of Words Students learned that negative experiences can be used to empower us. They did this through a powerful activity where the teacher read a story about a girl who was new to the school and had a very hard day.

2/26/26

Grade 5 Clap, Snap, Laugh Students identified what makes them different from others and what they have in common. They learned about themselves and their classmates through a fun game involving clapping, snapping, and laughing.

Grade 6 Feelings Juggle Through an interactive activity, students learned to understand different feelings as they arise in various situations. They also learned to name adults who can help them manage their feelings when overwhelmed.

Consistent Attendance Matters!

At Austin Public Schools, we know that showing up matters. Consistent attendance is one of the clearest predictors of a student’s success, not only in the classroom, but in life after graduation. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academically, graduate on time, and find success in college, careers, or both.

Strong attendance also tells us something important: it reflects how connected students and families/caregivers feel to their school community. When attendance drops, whether for specific groups or across the district, it often signals challenges we can help address, including school climate and engagement, as well as social, emotional, or family barriers.

That’s why we’re focused on building schools where students want to be. Through strong instruction, supportive relationships, and programs that care for the whole child, Austin Public Schools is working to ensure every student feels welcome, supported, and ready to learn each day. When students feel that connection, they show up, and when they show up, they succeed.

Please watch our new video about the importance of attendance.

Strategic Priorities Strategic Priorities

Priorities Updates:

Safe and Welcoming Learning Environment:

  • During the ICE protests we had a total of 24 students exercise their right to participate. Our attendance procedure does not allow students to return to class after intentionally leaving school grounds during the school day. Unlike AHS, we do not have an open campus.

  • Our schedule for next year will be largely the same with some minor adjustments allowing for better special education and ELL teacher access to small group instruction.

  • Throughout the year we have made adjustments and tweaks to process' and procedures to accommodate our new schedule. We use teacher input from our Site Leadership meetings to make adjustments.

  • We are working with the YMCA and Palmer bus company to address concerns with transportation after school to the Y. The Y-van only holds 15 students and it's first come, first serve. The van drops the first load off then returns to our back parking lot for the remainder of the students. We have had some behavior issues during this time.

Packer Profile for All Learners:

  • We have selected a new course to replace Green Architecture in our PLTW offerings. The new class is called The Magic of Electricity.

MTSS for all students:

  • We are reviewing data from our ELL audit.

  • I am meeting individually with each CORE teacher to set academic goals for the remainder of the year.

  • Our weekly PLC's are going well. Administration is working on scheduling more time for PLCs so teachers can collaborate better.

  • We continue to coordinate our BARR work with our MTSS process to meet individual student needs.

Excellence in Resource Management:

  • We are beginning staffing planning for next year and looking at teacher who have requested a move either in or out of the building.

  • Our budgets are all on track.
