Dear 6th Grade Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well! As we head into a full week of school, I want to remind everyone of a few important guidelines and updates.
Key Reminders for this Week:
Dress Code: Please ensure that students do not wear anything that covers their face, as this can be distracting and may cause safety concerns. Additionally, we ask that students refrain from bringing any items that resemble weapons.
Monitoring Behavior: As we transition from 5th grade in elementary to 6th grade in middle school, it’s crucial for parents to continue monitoring their children’s activities. We have noticed that many reported behavior infractions have occurred outside of school—often during sleepovers or unsupervised time in the community. Recently, there were an instance where 6th graders went swimming at the closed beach. We appreciate your support in discussing safe and appropriate choices with your child.
Our Commitment to Safety:
We are dedicated to ensuring that your child feels safe both physically and emotionally. A supportive environment is essential for fostering intellectual growth and challenge. Please encourage your child to be safe, compassionate, and kind in all their interactions.
Working Together:
Our goal is to work collaboratively with you to help our 6th graders develop into conscious, kind, empathetic, and inclusive citizens. Your partnership is vital in reinforcing these values at home.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement. Let’s make this week a positive and productive one for our students!
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Please email me at brunsone@district65.net.
Have a great week!
Best Regards,
Ms. Brunson

Black SonRISE Week 2 Recap
Greetings Fellow Parents and Caregivers,
I am pleased to report another impactful session with the Risers!
After a delicious breakfast, we picked up where we left off last week -- with the Black SonRISE creed:
I am a leader,
I am smart,
I am truthful,
I work hard every day towards my goals,
I never give up,
I have self control,
I see the best in others,
I am not afraid to make mistakes,
Today is going to be a great day.
Why are we challenging them to memorize these words of affirmation?
Because for them to develop into leaders, who are engaged in their community, they need to first believe in themselves.
Congratulations to Risers Nasir Daniel, Miles Hale, Rockwell Holman, Jeremiah Hudson, and Saul Petty-Adams, who each stood in front the entire group and flawlessly recited the creed from memory! We look forward to saluting more Risers in the weeks to come.
We then had a discussion about what becoming a leader in the community entails. We encouraged them to grow together as a group of young men, rooted in the foundational concepts of honor (behaving with integrity), clarity (being on the same page) , and accountability (they ARE their brother's keeper).
We wrapped the day with an exercise that illustrated how laws and policies impact communities at every level, nationally, and locally. The Risers shared which of the community's laws and policies they agreed with and disagreed with.
Thanks again for trusting us with your young men.
