The Viking Voyager

From the Principal's Desk
Hello Little Viking Families,
This February, our school is proud to honor Black History Month by celebrating the contributions, achievements, and voices of Black individuals throughout both past and present history. Each morning we will highlight influential Black leaders, innovators, artists, and changemakers during our morning announcements.
Throughout the month, our library lessons will include Black Americans and their stories, providing students with opportunities to explore history, culture, and perspectives through meaningful texts and discussions.
We are also excited to begin planning our first-ever District Cultural Night—an opportunity to celebrate all of the diverse cultures that make up our school community. Families and staff are invited to get involved by sharing traditions, food, music, stories, or experiences.
If you are interested in participating or helping with Cultural Night, please fill out this interest form. We would love your involvement as we work together to celebrate the cultures within our community.
100th Day of School - Friday, February 6th is our 100th day of school! Our littlest learners, PreK through 1st grade, will be celebrating by dressing up like they are 100 years old! Participation is optional, if they prefer not to dress up.
Just a reminder that Valentine's Day parties are coming up on Friday, February 13th. Students are welcome to bring Valentines to pass out to their classmates at the party. However NO FOOD/CANDY is permitted to be passed out from students due to allergy concerns throughout the building. Any edible valentines will be sent back home with the student who brought them.
Thank you,
-Mrs. Scanlan

Weather Chart
Please remember to dress your students for the weather! We go outside whenever possible even in the cold and snow! The district uses the child care weather watch chart below when determining if the weather is too severe for outdoor play. Any time the temperature and wind falls into the red, students will have indoor recess. Yellow we still go outside but the duration of the time spent outside is monitored. And we always go out when in the green zone!
Whenever it is actively raining, students will stay inside for recess and play.
From the Nurse's Desk
The winter season is in full swing, and all that comes with it can leave kids feeling extra tired. This is a friendly reminder that getting enough sleep helps children feel their best at school and at home. During sleep, their bodies and brains recharge—supporting learning, focus, growth, and a healthy immune system.
Community Engagement Event
D48 is back with another community engagement event! Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, teacher, coach, or mentor, this community book talk is for anyone who supports children and adolescents. Join us as we explore practical, research-based strategies from Shift by Ethan Kross to better understand our inner voice, manage stress, and model healthy thinking for the kids in our lives.
The event takes place at Albright Middle School from 6:00-7:30 PM. We will begin with a pizza dinner from 6:00-6:30 before diving into the engagement event from 6:30-7:30. Free childcare will be provided.
RSVPs are not required, but are appreciated if you plan to attend. RSVP here: https://forms.gle/1wVnRYYhRCmPVEFb7

Lunch Balances
Overdue Breakfast/ Lunch Balances
Don't forget to check and pay any overdue lunch balances. You can check balances and pay on your parent Skyward account. You can also send cash or check payment to school with your child in a marked envelope with name and what payment is for. The office will then account for the cash or check payment on your student's Skyward.

I Love U Guys ❤️
Standard Response Protocol
Salt Creek District 48 has adopted an emergency protocol response from the I Love U Guys Foundation. This is a program that has been adopted by many of the schools within DuPage County. Over the summer, the administrative team attended training on the protocol and is passing along the training to all staff. We also want to make families aware of the five different protocols so you can be familiar with the language you may hear your child or the school use.
Payments & Fees
In your parent portal in skyward, click on the fee payment tile, then in the far right hand top corner click on the "make online payments" button. This will take you to Revtrak. Make sure to sign up before you try to make payment. Once you can sign in, click the Make a Payment button in the middle of the page. This new service will streamline the payments so you can make a payment or set up recurring payments. This is directly connected to Skyward so you see the money immediately go to your child's account. If you have any questions please email or call your school office.
Preschool Payments: Once in Revtrak you will see in the upper right area an arrow next to SHOP. Click the arrow and pick Preschool in order for you to complete your payment. If you have any questions please email or call the Salt Creek school office.
