Dear Hiawatha Community,

This week our third graders did a phenomenal job taking their first Vermont State test! They worked hard, had a great attitude and we encouraged them all along the way.

We are excited to announce that we will have David Covell, author of Run Wild and Gather Round, visiting Hiawatha on Friday, April 18th, just in time for Earth Day. All students will have a chance to work directly with David and learn about his passions. Check out two of his books: Gather Round and Run Wild.

Have a great weekend!

Parent Input Form Reminder Parent Input Form Reminder

We are all looking forward to the classroom placement of students for the 2025-2026 school year. We hope that by sharing this process, you will understand parent/guardian input is one of the many sources used to make informed decisions regarding class placement. We strive to create vibrant, engaging classrooms that serve the needs of all children. The primary purpose of the placement process is to create equitable classroom environments that allow teachers to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of every student.

Please provide us with any relevant information you’d like to share regarding your child’s learning style, as well as strengths, areas of need, and any additional information that will be helpful. We do not take teacher requests.

Please drop the letter at the front office or return to your child’s classroom teacher by April 11, 2025.

Here is the link to it if needed.

Thank you

Message from Mrs. Safer in Music Message from Mrs. Safer in Music

Just a reminder… Hiawatha third graders are invited to participate in the EWSD Fine Arts Night next Thursday, April 10, 2025! Students from all our district schools will perform music together, including choral, orchestra and band ensembles. Our participating third graders will sing with other students in grades 3-12.

All interested third grade students will attend the chorus rehearsal on the morning of April 10th. If you have not returned your student’s permission slip, please do so by Monday, April 7. We are also looking for a few parent chaperones to go to EHS along with us that morning. Please let me know if you are willing to chaperone!

We look forward to sharing our learning with you in this amazing event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at ksafer@ewsd.org

Health and Wellness: Child Protection Unit For All Students Health and Wellness: Child Protection Unit For All Students

Hello Hiawatha Families,

We are entering a new unit in Health and Wellness in order to meet Vermont’s Act 1 and Act 60 requirements. This sexual abuse prevention legislation requires schools to have training for all employees, background checks for all new hires and volunteers, as well as comprehensive education that is developmentally appropriate for all age levels. To accomplish this we are using Second Step’s Child Protection Unit. This curriculum has lessons for each grade level. We will begin with talking about safety in general (wearing safety belts, not playing with fire, swimming only when an adult is present, etc.), then we will move into identifying safe and unsafe touch, as well as the R’s:

Recognize (If something feels unsafe), Refuse (saying no or words that mean no), and Report (telling a trusted adult).

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Jeff at (802) 857-7758 or jlester@ewsd.org.

Have a great weekend!

Jeff Lester, School Counselor & Dan Bahrenburg, P.E. and Health Teacher
