KMS NEWSLETTER

Thank you to all the families who joined us for Parent/Teacher Conferences last week. We appreciate your partnership and engagement in your student’s learning. This year, KMS tried a new format that focused on scheduled team meetings for students who may benefit from extra academic or behavioral support, while also keeping open hours for families who wished to drop in, visit the Book Fair, or meet teachers individually. We’d love to hear your feedback on how this new approach worked for your family. Please take a few minutes to complete our short survey, linked here: https://forms.office.com/r/WMjxHQpGyW
The annual Federal Impact Aid Survey will be sent home early this week. These forms are very important for Kodiak Island Borough School District, as they help determine the level of federal funding that supports our schools and students. Please complete and return the form with your student as soon as possible. Even if you do not think your household qualifies, every returned form helps.
School picture retakes will take place on Monday, October 27. Any student who missed picture day or would like a new photo can have their retake taken that morning.
As we head toward Halloween, please help remind students to use good judgment with costumes. Face masks and hoods are not allowed, and any props that look like weapons (such as swords, knives, or toy guns) must be left at home. Regular school dress code rules still apply, and costumes should be comfortable and appropriate for a regular school day.
The first quarter ends on Thursday, October 31. Report cards will be finalized soon after, and many students will see a change in their schedules when the new quarter begins the week after Halloween. We’ll close out the week with a pep rally and home basketball games as we cheer on our KMS boys and girls teams against Homer. Let’s finish the quarter strong, celebrate responsibly, and show our Grizzly pride!

Mrs. King will have the working draft mural in her classroom to increase student accessibility of the project beyond the club.

FROM KMS COUNSELING DEPARTMENT: LEARNING TO IDENTIFY FEELINGS
Identifying feelings is important because it helps us understand what’s going on inside and why we react the way we do. When we can name our emotions, we can better express our needs, make healthier choices, and connect more honestly with others. Learning to identify feelings builds emotional awareness and resilience, which supports overall well-being.
Try this at home:
Have everyone in the family look at the Feelings Chart and then name the emotions they are currently feeling or felt during the day.
Need help starting the conversation? Use these sentence starters to help:
“Today I felt mostly ___ because ___.”
“One feeling that showed up for me today was ___.”
“A time I felt ___ today was when ___.”
“Right now, I would describe my mood as ___.”
“I noticed I felt ___ when ___ happened.”
*Bonus: It’s important for adults to model the ability to name their feelings too! Join your student in the activity to make it even more meaningful.
