Kindergarten "Switch Day" Kindergarten "Switch Day"

The Kindergarten Team and Mrs. Barnum the Elementary School Counselor, collaborated to put on a social emotional learning “switch day.” All kindergarten classes were mixed up and took turns rotating between classrooms where a different activity took place. Activities included emotions charades, teamwork hot potato, a yoga and mindfulness practice and a CVC word cooperation game. These activities were designed to have students practice skills like teamwork, cooperation, emotional regulation and feelings identification.

Grade 4 Field Trip to Spa Little Theatre Grade 4 Field Trip to Spa Little Theatre

Students in 4th grade traveled to Spa Little Theatre on Friday May 16 as part of SPAC’s Classical Kids program. The multimedia concert featured a string quartet of two violins, viola and cello. Our own CES student, Mia M. participated in a collaborative reading of poetry and music! It is wonderful for our students to have the opportunity to participate in live music locally! SPAC will generously provide 2 free tickets to a summer concert featuring the Philadelphia Orchestra for each of our students.

Author Visit: Rachel Nardin Author Visit: Rachel Nardin

Rachel Nardin, local author of Racoons Go Rafting came to the school to promote our love of reading. There was an assembly for UPK, K and 1st grade students. The author also went to visit each of those classrooms and students received a bookmark and craft activity. There were book sales prior to her visiting and 20% goes to the school library.

Why did you come back to teach at Corinth?

Not teaching at Corinth was not much of a consideration for me. I was a part of the Corinth community and although I could have remained living in Corinth and teaching somewhere else, I felt like the school was the core of what makes our community special. Teaching in Corinth would give me even more opportunities to give back and hopefully make positive impacts on students and their families like I had growing up.

Fun facts about yourself?

I'm a mom to two CES kiddos in the district and a wife to a Corinth alumni. When we aren't involved in sports or school events, we love to camp and hang out at home playing games, swimming in the pool, or doing house projects together.

What do you love about our school/community?

Although most of my time is spent at CES, as a district I love how our school is a supportive community of staff and students. I feel like everyone is encouraged to learn and it is a safe place to be yourself. I truly think our school has the best of the best and we are all a team (and family) who will do whatever it takes to make sure our students are having the most positive and successful experience that they deserve to have. As a teacher and a parent, I feel seen, heard, and appreciated.

Fun and Simple Ways to Keep your Kids Engaged with Reading this Summer!

Did you know?

According to research, a child who reads only 1 minute a day outside of school will learn 8,000 words by the end of sixth grade where a child who reads 20 minutes outside of school will learn 1,800,000 words! That’s huge! If reading isn’t one of your child’s top priorities, try to set up an incentive program.

Check out these ideas for books by grade that your child may be interested in:

https://www.sspl.org/children/booklists/

1. Visit the Corinth Library! Help your child find “right fit” books. Right fit books are books that are of high interest to your child and are not beyond their reading ability. You can use the five finger test to determine if the book is too difficult for your child. Open the book to a page with many words. Have your child begin reading the text. Hold up a finger for each word he/she does not know. If you have 4 or 5 fingers up, the text may be too difficult for your child to read independently.

2. Make it fun!

  • Read to your child! When you read to your child, he/she hears the rhythm of language. Be sure to read with expression! Changing your voice for the different characters in the story and increasing volume for exciting parts are only a few ways to make reading interesting.

  • Explore different types of reading like poetry! For our little ones, poetry is a great way to improve phonemic awareness skills as poetry often incorporates rhyme. For our older children, poetry is a means of improving fluency.

  • Read outdoors! Head out to the backyard and lay out a blanket to read on! Heading to a park for a picnic or to the beach? Pack books!

  • All types of reading count! Reading directions for a recipe or directions for assembling a toy are fun ways to incorporate reading.

  • Play Games with Words! There are tons of ways to have fun learning letters and sight words. To incorporate more rhyming for your little ones, listen to nursery rhymes (sing, dance or recite. Mother Goose club on youtube is fantastic.

3. If you have an iPad, try downloading a few interactive books. There are also many reading games that keep children engaged.
