SAMIAH WOOTEN

At the start of the school year, Samiah Wooten took an environmental and cultural awarenss trip to Guanaja and Roatan, Honduras. She is a member of Youth Diving With a Purpose and Youth International Cultural Awareness Program. The group this year consisted of youth from all over the world; Costa Rica, Guanaja Honduras, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, and South Africa

Each year, her instructors teach a dozen or more youth about coral reef ecology, leading them on underwater expeditions to survey reef health and outplant, or transplant, corals. On the last day, the group partnered with Roatan Marine Park to clean the coral trees and out plant over 75 elkhorn coral back to the reef in Roatan. Saving the world one coral at a time.

“Not all coral reefs are as healthy as they are in Guanaja, being able to see healthy ecosystems compared to the ones back in the States advances my urge to take action.” Samiah Wooten
