From the Principal’s Desk
Gunnison Middle School Families,
It’s been another great week at GMS! Our students are working hard and staying engaged both in and out of the classroom. The excitement and energy in the building make it clear that great things are happening all around us.
A quick reminder that there will be no school next Monday and Tuesday (October 13–14) for our fall break. Enjoy the extra-long weekend!
The end of the first quarter is next Friday—time is flying! Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the corner, and we’re looking forward to connecting with families to celebrate growth and set goals for the rest of the year.
Thanks for your continued support and for being such an important part of our school community. GMS is a great place to learn and grow!
If you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to reach out. You also schedule a meeting with me using the link below.

This week for lunch...
Hello Mustangs! This is a very special edition of the GMS Counselor's Corner, where I get to introduce you to our newest (and furriest) staff member! Drum roll... Meet Jasmine! Jasmine is a beautiful, sweet, intelligent, and energetic yellow lab who is about 2.5 years old. She has been hard at work teaching me all sorts of commands and intel to be a successful handler. We passed the ADI (Assistance Dogs International) test yesterday, and we are now a certified ADI and AKC Canine Good Citizen team. We will officially graduate from KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc on Saturday and then head back to Gunnison! There are many, many people to thank for making it possible for Jasmine to join our community and it's hard to believe that, after all this time, Jasmine will be at our school next week! While in Kansas, I have been able to take her to the local school as a part of our training, and it was absolutely wonderful to see how the students and staff acted around her. There was a lot of excitement, happiness, and learning! A kindergarten class enjoyed showing her how they were cutting out farm animals and glueing them on paper. It was precious!
Our facility dog will provide the following benefits for students, staff and visitors:
- Modeling appropriate behavior
- Teaching positive interactions
- Having a calming effect
- Providing unconditional love
A perspective of what you can learn from a dog:
- Be calm, kind, and patient
- Make good choices
- Always be PAWSATIVE!
- Do, believe, and love what you want to
- Kisses always help
- If you fail the first time, try again
- There is always time to have fun!
And a few things to remember:
- Jasmine is a professionally trained dog who has been thoroughly tested for temperament and highly trained to have excellent manners
- Please ask permission before touching and petting her
- Never feed Jasmine anything
- Be calm around Jasmine and please don't whistle or make loud noises near her
- You can absolutely ask her for a hug, a high five, kisses, and a cuddle! Plus, she loves to have her belly rubbed!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Your child's participation in school maximizes their life opportunities! With daily attendance, students can succeed in their education, have access to support, and won't fall behind socially. They gain skills, knowledge, and learn values that will set them up for further learning and help them participate in their community!
We understand that illness, family commitments, and other unavoidable circumstances can interfere with your child’s attendance. However, we cannot stress enough the importance of consistent and punctual attendance. Classroom experiences are impossible to replicate and the work missed cannot be made up adequately.
Thank you for your support!
End of Quarter 1: Honor Roll
The last day of Quarter 1 is Friday, October 17. This is a great time to talk to your child about finishing the quarter strong and setting goals for their academics. At GMS, we celebrate students who make the Honor Roll with a ceremony in April. These are the requirements for participation:
- 3.5 GPA or higher all four quarters
- No F’s
- No more than 3 unexcused absences per semester
GMS Dance Expectations
- The Fall Dance will be chaperoned by Gunnison Middle School staff.
- Once students leave the building they may not return.
- Students and parents/guardians are responsible for making prior arrangements to be picked up immediately after the event.
- Students must be in school the day of the event to attend (special circumstances may apply)
- Only students enrolled at Gunnison Middle School, or directly connected to our school community, may attend events. Younger siblings are not permitted.
