The Cannon Connection
2023-2024 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
May 5 - 11, 2024
Good morning Cannon Community,
It's hard to believe we only have 13 and a half days left in this school year! We are excited to continue our fun and exciting end of year festivities! We have another very busy week planned this week. Make sure to check out all of the important upcoming dates below!
Our 3rd graders had a BLAST at NASA last Thursday and Friday! It's a remarkable experience for our scholars and it's not possible without the amazing planning, organizing, fundraising, and grant writing by our OUTSTANDING Teachers! Please help me give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Donaldson, Ms. Whitsell, Ms. Roe, Mrs. Meyer, and Mrs. Hagar for making this experience a reality for our third grade Cubs! We also want to THANK Our NASA Parent Chaperones! Thank you for making the journey to the Johnson Space Center in Houston with our third grade team and your Cubs; We hope you had just as much fun as your kids!
This week we honor our staff for National Teacher Appreciation Week! Our staff is dedicated to each and everyone of our Cubs and they go above and beyond to support them every day. We love and appreciate their hard work each and every day, but National Teacher Appreciation Week is a fun week of celebrating them for loving your CUBS! Take a moment to show our school staff appreciation, love, and gratitude this week!
Please set aside time this week to complete Returning and New Student Registration. This is a very important step as we start to create our school rosters for the 2024-2025 school year! As a reminder, Students with completed registration may have the opportunity to keep their device over the summer (some devices are scheduled for a refresh). *In order for your scholar to keep their GCISD device (iPad or Chromebook) over the summer, registration must be completed by May 17. Unfortunately, this does not apply to 2nd graders. Second-grade devices will be picked up at the end of the school year to be cleaned and prepared to give to kindergarteners at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. Second graders, as new 3rd graders, will receive their Chromebooks at the start of the 2024-2025 school year. See below for more information.
It's also the time of year when we need everyone to resolve their Negative School Lunch Balances
and Outstanding Tech Fees; Help Us Help You!
As a reminder, the last day of school is Thursday, May 23 and is an early dismissal day. We will begin dismissal at 11:45 - School's Out for Summer! Your 2024-2025 Principal Newsletter will begin Sunday, July 21st. Until then, have a happy and safe summer break with your family and friends!
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett

News to Share ~ A Special Note from our Assistant Principal, Lisa Brown
My journey at GCISD has been nothing short of extraordinary! Over the course of 27 full-time and three part-time years, I've had the privilege of serving Cannon for the past decade, including being part of the planning committee for the new Cannon Facility. The opportunity to work in a school with a clear mission and vision, dedicated to nurturing scholars through a problem-solving lens, has been a true honor and a place where my heart will always reside.
It has been an absolute honor and a privilege to serve the teachers, students, and parents of the Cannon community. Witnessing the growth of our students and collaborating with their families has been an enriching experience, one that I will always cherish as the best part of my career.
One of the greatest joys of my career has been raising my four children in this district. Today, they are all happily married and thriving in their respective fields. In fact, our eldest is expecting our second GRANDBABY in September, a testament to the blessings that have come our way. I couldn't be prouder to be a La-La!
As I embark on this new chapter, I am filled with excitement and anticipation. I'm looking forward to the freedom to travel without being bound by a school calendar, embark on new adventures with my husband, delve into some captivating books, and enjoy leisurely walks with my dog. I'm also eager to explore new ways to contribute to the district and the education world, a prospect that fills me with a sense of flexibility and possibility.
