Surfside Shark Bites
Week of November 2-6, 2026
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Happy Friday, Surfside families!
Surfside enjoyed a great week celebrating the academic accomplishments of our students during our first ever "Shark Shiver." This event includes food, fun, and certificates for our awesome students.
We are excited about how fast construction is coming along. Steps, ramps, and sidewalks for some areas were poured this week.
The Sharks soccer team wrapped up soccer season today. The results have not yet come in, so we will update you soon. Next up, basketball season with Coach Donald Vivian.
Would you like an update on your students' progress? Just contact your students' teacher(s).
Thank you,
Principal Frandsen
Construction Update
The most recent work done in the construction zone includes:
Some of the concrete sidewalks around the new admin building and CDC are prepped
The poles for the overhead electrical to supply the temporary portables were installed
The ramps for the temporary portables were built and installed
Interior work on the new buildings continues, including plumbing, electrical, IT, sheetrock, etc.
The current estimates for moving into the portables and a couple of the new buildings is sometime between November and early January.

🐕🐶Another fun day with the volunteer dogs from the Helen Woodward Animal Center. We are so fortunate to have these visits on the first Tuesday of each month—nothing like a little Animal Therapy to put a smile on the students' faces.
Shark Shiver
🦈On Thursday, we held our first "Shark Shiver" to celebrate our attendance and honor roll recipients from Direct Instruction and course completion recipients for Independent Study. Congratulations to ALL!!
The students had a pizza and ice cream celebration and fun creating henna art. Go Sharks!! 🦈

Elementary School News
Dear Families,
Students had an opportunity to learn about forces and energy and design a vehicle that could carry an egg (ping pong ball) and safely transport it. Many had wonderful ideas and used cardboard, magnetic tiles, and other materials to construct their vehicle. I love how students get to experience all grade level science due to the nature of our school.
Have you checked out your child’s google classroom recently? We have uploaded new science materials for each unit. Click on Google Classroom, click on the grade level, click on Classwork, Click on Module 1, Click View More (if necessary). There are videos available to watch for your child’s grade level and they can do some of the activities based on them.
Grades 3-5 will need to complete the Interim Assessments of Reading, Writing, and Math the week of Nov 9-13. Grades K-2 will need to stay home that week so I can have all 3rd-5th graders complete their testing that week. We will start testing each day at 9:30am-11:30am. All students will need to test in-person.

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
