🚧 Frank Schade Fieldhouse Construction
Project Background
The North Fieldhouse wood floor has reached the end of its functional life and can no longer be sanded or repaired. In preparation for a planned replacement, the District conducted specialized testing on the layers beneath the surface.
The Findings: Testing in late 2024 and early 2025 revealed that a legacy urethane floor located beneath the current wood surface contains mercury. While current air monitoring confirms the gym remains safe for use today, these materials will continue to degrade over time.
The Decision: Following discussions that began with the Facilities and Finance Committee in May 2025 and continued with the Board of Education this year, the District has chosen to replace the floor now. By addressing this now, we are managing the timeline proactively with the goal of the space being available for next school year.
Safety Protocols During Construction
Student and staff safety is our priority. We have already increased airflow in the gym to mitigate any concerns, and the following strict safety protocols will be in place during the entire project:
Negative Pressure: The gym will be kept under "negative pressure" to ensure no air from the work zone enters the rest of the school.
Specialized Filtration: Large exhaust fans with high-grade filters will be used to capture and remove particles.
Continuous Monitoring: An environmental consulting firm (EMC) will be on-site daily to monitor air quality in the gym and hallways.
Fieldhouse Closure and Impact
The North Fieldhouse will officially close after school Friday, March 20, 2026. All gym doors will be sealed and marked.
Physical Education Classes: PE classes will continue through the end of the school year using our swimming pool and outdoor facilities. In the event of bad weather, we will find alternative solutions to ensure students meet the standards of their courses.
Timeline: The removal of the old floor is expected to take 6-7 weeks. After that, we must wait for the air quality to meet strict safety standards before the new floor is installed. Our goal is to have the gym open by the first week of September.
Summer Camps: All summer athletic camps (except Spartan Strength) have been moved to Vel Phillips Middle School.
Weight Room: The weight room and trainer's room will remain open, but users must enter through Entrance 20 from the outside.
Pool: The pool will remain open and swim schedules are not impacted.
Looking Ahead: Summer Site Shutdown
To maximize efficiency, we are using the Fieldhouse shutdown as an opportunity to get a "head start" on referendum-funded auditorium projects (approved by voters in April 2025). Consequently, the entire North site (except for the weight room and pool) will be closed this summer for pre-demolition work and site preparation. Major construction on the auditorium will officially begin in Fall 2026.
Summer School Location: Because the campus is closed, 2026 Summer School high school classes will take place at Oshkosh West High School. We will continue to have a shuttle bus between North and West.
We appreciate your patience as we complete these safety and facility upgrades. These investments ensure that Oshkosh North remains a safe and modernized environment for our students.
World Affairs Seminar- Sponsored by Rotary Club of Oshkosh
The Rotary Club of Oshkosh is again sponsoring a student this summer to attend the World Affairs Seminar (WAS). We are looking for a student that would be interested in this immersive opportunity. The Seminar starts Saturday June 20 and ends on Friday June 26, 2026. It is located on Carroll University’s campus (Waukesha) and is open to US and International students between the ages of 15 – 18 years of age.
Here is a great summary of the WAS:
The 2026 World Affairs Seminar, Uniting for Peace, will introduce delegates to institutions, people, and ideas that address such challenges as they strive to build a more peaceful world. Delegates will be challenged to create a holistic, inclusive understanding of peacebuilding, one that considers the global, national, and local issues that often stand in the way of opportunity, equality, and justice. As Rotary International reminds us, “when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global impact.” WAS 2026 will allow you to put this powerful idea in motion.
Here is what a student can expect:
Cost: Free
Lodging: on Carroll University’s campus residence halls
Meals: Saturday dinner through Friday breakfast
Transportation: student must provide their own transportation
I have attached a flyer for students if you would kindly help us to spread the word. Interested students can reach out to me for more information – sara.muhlbauer@lakelandcareinc.com

Concession Stand Volunteers Needed
The Oshkosh North Booster Club is looking for parent and student volunteers to help staff the concession stand at upcoming events. The Booster Club plays a vital role in supporting Oshkosh North athletics and activities by helping fund equipment, uniforms, team needs, and special opportunities for our students. The concession stand is one of the biggest ways they make that support possible, and they can’t do it without volunteers. Parents are encouraged to help, and students are also welcome to volunteer. Please consider signing up to support our Spartan community at the link below. If your student participates in a sport, please add their sport after your name when signing up.
