STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MRS. NICOLE O'TOOLE
I grew up with a passion for teaching as a number of my extended family members are teachers as well. Originally from the northwest side of the city of Chicago, specifically Arlington Heights, my journey in education has taken me across various states, enriching my experience and broadening my perspectives.
After graduating from John Hersey High School, I pursued my undergraduate studies at Grand Valley State University (GVSU), where I majored in Biology and History. It was at GVSU that I laid the foundation for my career in education while also nurturing my interests in the sciences and humanities.
Driven by a desire to enhance my teaching skills, I went on to complete my Master's degree in Learning, Design, and Technology from Central Michigan University. This advanced degree has equipped me with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate innovative teaching methodologies and technologies into my classroom.
My teaching career began in Greentown, Indiana, where I honed my craft and developed a deep appreciation for fostering student learning. In 2016, I made the move to Michigan after marrying my husband, Caleb, and joined the faculty at Watervliet High School. At Watervliet, I teach a range of courses including Biology, Anatomy and Physiology (Biology 2), and AP Biology. I also serve as a co-advisor for the National Honor Society, where I get to demonstrate my commitment to academic excellence and student leadership development.
Outside of the classroom, I find joy in spending time with my family. Alongside my husband Caleb, son Cooper, and mother Michele, I enjoy exploring the outdoors and engaging in various activities such as camping, hiking, and beach outings. I am looking forward to being able to combine my interests this summer while visiting Denver, where my sister Melissa, and brother-in-law Sagar, just moved.
My little-known fact is that I broke my back twice while participating in gymnastics. Although this has left me with chronic back pain, I still look back on my time as a gymnast fondly.
WHAT'S UP IN ENGLISH 9?
English 9 students are preparing to read the novel Animal Farm by completing various stations that include the background on the Russian Revolution, analyzing an allegorical painting, identifying the tone of the novel's movie trailer, reading children's books on fables, and others. "The stations are really easy. They get the point across. I think it's a good thing you can finish in a day," Claire Moore; "I like that you can work at your own pace," Kyle Domingo-Sturgeon; "I like doing the Utopia station. I'm going to kidnap Mrs. Hollandworth and put her in my Utopia," Olivia Mitchell.

MARCH IS READING MONTH!
As National Honor Society members we make it a top priority each year to visit our elementary
schools during the month of March to participate in “March is Reading Month.” Each Thursday
during the month of March a handful of our members make a trip over to North school to read to
all of the classes. We find that it is essential for our members to interact with the elementary
students in order to remember why we do the volunteer work that we do. As past elementary
students ourselves, we remember how inspiring it was to have the high school students come to
visit us in our buildings, now it is our privilege to give the younger students that same
experience.
PLEASE REVIEW THESE PBIS EXPECTATIONS WITH YOUR CHILD!

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT SCHEDULING
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we approach Spring, it is time to think about your students scheduling plans for the 2024-2025 school year. During the third week of March, I will be in the English classrooms to go over schedule options for next school year with your student. At that time students will be given a high school graduation checklist,--a snapshot of their high school transcript listing classes that they have passed, failed, or still need to take, a copy of their Graduation Progress Report and a list of classes that will be offered in the new school year. Students will be guided through manually auditing their transcripts against the graduation checklist and then be asked to make informed decisions concerning the upcoming school year based on the graduation requirements that they still need to complete. Students will have two days to submit their official requests within PowerSchool allowing them time to bring the above listed items home and discuss them with their parents/guardians before submitting their final requests. The graduation checklist requires a parent/guardian signature and will come home on the day that I am in your students' English class, so please be on the lookout for this document. Additionally, course offerings are listed on the back of the graduation checklist and can be found in our Course Catalog which is posted on the school website at: https://www.watervlietps.org/o/high-school/page/student-services.
Here are the dates that I will be in English classes:
Freshman - March 21st, 2024 (schedule requests to be submitted in PS by March 25th)
Sophomores - March 19th, 2024 (schedule requests to be submitted in PS by March 21st)
Juniors - March 20th, 2024 (schedule requests to be submitted in PS by March 22nd)
Once schedule requests are submitted, I will work through meeting with students individually to resolve
any questions concerning scheduling. With that being said, please feel free to reach out if you have any
questions or concerns with your students schedule for the upcoming school year. Students can
additionally email to set up a time with me to go over scheduling questions.
As you consider your students schedule for next year please account for the following graduation
requirements:
● 4 credits of Mathematics (or a math related course senior year)
● 4 credits of English
● 3 credits of Science (a 4th year is encouraged for those attending a four year college; this can be
an additional year of Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Placement Biology, Anatomy & Physiology )
● 3 credits of Social Studies
● 1 credit of Fine Arts (band, choir, art, woods or Van Buren Tech Center or Berrien CTE 11
th or 12th grades)
● 1 credit of PE/Health
● 2 consecutive credits of the same Foreign Language (we offer Spanish at WHS or online foreign
language courses for 10, 11, 12 with a qualifying GPA)
● 24 total credits are required to earn a Watervliet High School Diploma
Please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns and be advised that requests are not final
schedules and are subject to be adjusted based on student need to complete graduation requirements or due to student/parent request.
Thanks,
Jamie Dawson

The HS Robotics team competed in their 2nd competition this past weekend!
The HS Robotics team competed in their 2nd competition this past weekend in St. Joe. Having made some adjustments to the code and robot from week 1, the team 9758 Pantron-X hit the field with much more confidence.
The competition was much more intense competing against teams that have gone to the world competitions many years in a row, Team 9758 was not intimidated. Building relationships with the other teams there proved to be healthy for their strong showing. Finishing 23rd out of 38 teams with a record of 6-6, Pantron-X was called upon for the championship match as the alliance's 3rd robot needed a replacement.
Pantron-X received the Rookie All Star award which is the highest award a rookie team can receive. This is an automatic bid to the State Competition in Saginaw in April! Team 9758 will be attending the state competition at SVSU.

PLEASE ACCESS CANVAS FOR YOUR CHILD!
We want you accessing your child's Canvas account! Please take the following steps so that you can be checking on his/her grades on a regular basis.
Steps for parents to create a parent Canvas account.
Obtain Student Pairing Code
Sign up for an account through your phone app or on the computer using an email address.
Parents should go to www.watervlietps.org and click on the link "Canvas for Parents" in the middle of the homepage. Here is the direct link: https://www.
canvas-resources. Here you will find the screenshot instructions, a 7 slide presentation and brief videos on navigating the parent portal, checking grades, viewing assignments and accessing teacher feedback.
Students need to create the pairing code for their parents and it is only valid for 7 days.
If you are having difficulty obtaining the student pairing code, teachers have access to this information within their course by going to People and clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and choosing Export Pairing Codes. Again, these pairing codes are only good for 7 days. Quick way for teachers get this code to a parent when communicating with them.
Instructions are online AND shared every Friday in the high school parent newsletter.
Please reach out to us in the high school office if you have questions or concerns about accessing your child's Canvas account. We need and want your support at the high school!
