New LCPS Program Supports Students in Recovery from Substance Use Disorders
This school year, LCPS launched the Recovery, Inspiration, Strength, and Empowerment (R.I.S.E.) Academy, a specialized program designed to support high school students in recovery from substance use disorders. Co-located at North Star School in Leesburg, R.I.S.E. offers a safe, structured, and compassionate environment where students can pursue their high school diplomas while receiving the care they need to thrive. Staffed by LCPS educators and professionals trained to meet both academic and emotional needs, the R.I.S.E. Academy provides a holistic approach to student success. Through this innovative initiative, LCPS continues its commitment to supporting students and families with meaningful, targeted resources. Read more about R.I.S.E. Academy.
Your Feedback on Cell Phone and Personal Device Use in Schools
From Sept. 2 to Sept. 15, we asked our families, staff and students to offer feedback in response to Section 22.1-79.3:1 of the Code of Virginia, the updated law which addresses student cell phone and smart device use at school. Virginia law now broadly “restrict[s] student cell phone and smart device possession and use on school property from bell to bell,” meaning “after the first bell rings at the start of the school day to begin instructional time until the dismissal bell rings at the end of the school day.”
We know many students bring personal technology to school with the intention of using devices for educational purposes, and this change may have potential impacts on available digital tools or preferences, productivity, visibility to your students’ location, and more. “Smart devices” are defined as personal electronic devices that can connect to the Internet and wirelessly collect, process, and transmit data, including smart watches and tablets. This definition covers personal computers, Macs, and any device that is internet-connected.
Your feedback helps us anticipate and address any gaps and unintended consequences that may result from aligning LCPS policies with the new state law. The Cell Phone and Personal Device Use in Schools Results report summarizes and presents your thoughts on the potential positive and negative impacts.
Feedback will be reviewed by the Student Behavior & Accountability Committee as they develop policies for submission to the entire School Board. Providing feedback does not represent a guarantee that feedback will be included in the final policy. The authority for final approval of any policy lies solely with the Loudoun County School Board.
River Bend Middle School Family Feedback Circle Strengthens Community Connection
More than 200 families attended the first Family Feedback Circle of the year, hosted by River Bend Middle School in partnership with LCPS’ English Learner Family and Community Engagement team and the Division of Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility. The goal of the Family Feedback Circles is to promote building stronger connections between families and the school. Together, River Bend and its families are shaping an environment that reflects the richness of its diversity and the promise of a united community. “Family Feedback Circles give us a chance to listen first and to understand what matters most to our families, what values they hold and how we can better support their children. Our goal is for every family to feel valued, seen and heard at River Bend,” said Dr. Valerie DiCarlo, River Bend Middle assistant principal.
