Purple House 5 2023-2024

February 20, 2026
It has been a wonderful week of learning in Purple 5. In math, learners are growing their geometry vocabulary and strengthening their understanding of key terms as they describe and classify shapes with increasing precision. In reading and writing, we have begun outlining and planning essays for our debate research projects. Students are asking thoughtful questions and organizing their ideas like true researchers.
Our scientists are wrapping up our Earth science unit, and I am truly impressed with their deep understanding of how the Sun, Earth, and Moon interact to cause day and night, the seasons, and so much more. Their ability to explain these big concepts has been exciting to see!
Next week, Texas Wildlife will come for their last learning visit of the year. Weather permitting we will be learning outside. Please remind your child to wear apprropriate shoes and watch the temperatures for the day!
Thank you for your continued support at home. We are proud of the hard work happening in Purple 5!
With gratitude,
Ms. Voltz

Caves!
After our read-aloud of Caves by Nell Cross Beckerman, our classroom was filled with wonder! The beautiful language and fascinating facts had learners completely captivated. We followed our reading with an incredible video that truly had us gasping in amazement as we explored the hidden world beneath Earth’s surface.
Curiosity is definitely growing—so don’t be surprised if your child starts asking to tour a cave soon!
Color Run
SAVE THE DATE! LEE COLOR RUN COMING SOON
Fundraising is LIVE for our annual Color Run, with all proceeds going to the PE Department, and, of course, one of our learners' favorite events of the year, FIELD DAY!! Visit rjlpto.org/colorrun for more details, to donate, and to register to run or throw color at your learner's race. Ask your learner about the awesome prize incentives their classes are working towards.
Incentives!
Using Venn diagrams to Compare and Contrast Quadrilateral Attributes!
Learn at Home Math Challenge: Polygon Picture Hunt! 📸📐
Purple FamiLEE, it’s time to take math outside!
This week, we are exploring polygons—closed shapes made of straight line segments. Now it’s your turn to go on a real-world shape hunt!
Discuss the Attributes:
How many sides?
How many vertices?
Are the sides congruent, parallel?
Does it have right, acute or obtuse angles?
Is it a polygon or polyhedron?
Be ready to share your photos next week!
Learner Spotlight!
As students wrapped up their comparisons of rapid changes to Earth’s surface, their note-taking included some impressive scientific illustrations… and one learner truly leveled up!
Congratulations to Vaishnavi! Your detailed drawings and thoughtful notes show careful observation and strong scientific thinking. Awesome work, so proud of you! 👏🔬🌍
