October Weekly Updates

Dear Shaw Heights Families,

I would like to personally invite you and your student to join us for our Open House, Parent-Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, from 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM.

This event is a wonderful opportunity to meet your student’s teachers, learn more about their progress, and discover ways to support their success both at school and at home. You’ll also have the chance to tour the building, visit classrooms, and connect with other Shaw Heights families and staff.

We’ll have information tables, school resources. I hope you’ll take this time to engage with our teachers and celebrate all the great things happening here at Shaw Heights Middle School.

Hello SHMS Families! My name is Megan Chestnut and this is my 3rd year at SHMS as a special education interventionist, and my 11th year in WPS. One of the greatest joys of being a special education interventionist is having the opportunity to see students grow in unique and powerful ways. Every day, we get to witness the students' moments of success. Daily, they are mastering new math skills, gaining confidence in reading, and learning to self-advocate. These successes will stick with them, and serve as building blocks as they continue to grow and learn.

Special education interventionists play many roles in a school. We are teachers, but also collaborators, cheerleaders, problem-solvers, and advocates. We work alongside general education teachers, we consult with speech, occupational, mental health and physical therapists to support the whole child. We help design behavior supports, build social-emotional skills, and guide students in reaching their personal and academic goals. Most importantly, we strive to create a classroom environment where every child feels valued, capable, and celebrated.

Outside of the classroom, I love spending time with my husband and our two boys (ages 7 and 2). You can usually find us on an outdoor adventure, having epic Michael Jackson dance parties, or reveling in the nostalgia of ’90s cartoons.

The partnership between families and educators is essential to student success. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for working with us as part of their team. It’s been amazing to see the progress our students make each day, and I’m excited for the continued growth this school year will bring.

Some of our students had the opportunity to visit the pumpkin patch to enjoy a fun fall celebration! They explored the farm, picked pumpkins, and took part in seasonal activities to celebrate the beauty of autumn together. It was a wonderful day filled with smiles, teamwork, and fall fun!
