Black Bears

.
During October in Social Studies, Team Black Bears has been learning all about geography! Students colored and explored all 50 states, using fun mnemonics to help them remember each state. Our 5th graders also learned about the seven continents and the five major oceans, building their understanding of the world around them!

ELA – In reading, students have been building their knowledge about inventors while focusing on the informational text genre. We read texts and watched videos about how people can create amazing things through innovation, perseverance and the desire to solve problems. We also focused on building our vocabulary through word study. Students wrote an expository essay about an inventor from our focal text. Ask your student which inventor they chose to research!

Math - In math, students are learning how to read, write, compare, and round decimals to the thousandths. They so far are rocking this. Every day in math, we also recite a positive self talk mantra. This mantra reminds the students that they are many things like smart, funny, brave, and can do anything they set their mind to. Ask your math student if they know the mantra and can repeat it to you.

Science/Social Studies - In Science/Social Studies, we have been exploring the exciting world of geography! Students have learned about cardinal and intermediate directions, latitude and longitude, hemispheres, regions, continents, and all 50 states. To help us remember all of this new information, we’ve used fun songs, catchy mnemonics, and memory tricks! We are now wrapping up our geography unit by learning about different landforms. Ask your student to share some of the fun strategies they’ve used to remember what we’ve learned—especially those 50 states!
