Mustang News: March 6, 2026
From the Principal's Desk
Wow, I spoke too soon about the beautiful weather we were experiencing last week - although the moisture is much needed!
A huge thank you to the Gunnison Police Department, GCSAPP, Mentors, and everyone who helped make last week’s Substance Use Prevention Night such a meaningful event. It was truly inspiring to see so many community partners in the same room alongside such strong parent participation. Opportunities like this remind us how powerful it is when a community comes together to support our students.
Great job as well to Mr. Jones and our GMS band and choir students for their performances this week. Your hard work and talent were on full display, and we are proud of the dedication you bring to your music.
We are now just one week away from spring break and the end of the third quarter. It certainly does not look like spring outside, but the semester is flying by! We look forward to finishing the quarter strong and continuing the great work happening across our school.

Next week for lunch...
This month our students and staff are focused on the value/practice of "I strive for high academic growth." I can't believe I'm typing this, but we're almost about to enter our final quarter of this school year! The third quarter ends next Friday, March 13th and the fourth quarter will start on Monday, March 23rd. We've been having a lot of conversations with students about their academic goals for this final stretch of school and the 8th graders have been talking about goals that will set them up for success in high school. All the 7th graders just set academic SMART (see below for more info) goals during TACO (talk about careers on) Tuesdays in Social Studies. We'll enter our CMAS testing season in April, which is always a great chance for students to show off their growth from this year in math, reading, and science (8th graders only). May will bring about the end of the year iReady Diagnostic testing. Then, we all work together to finish the year off strong and celebrate student achievements. Phew! If you'd like to set goals with your student(s) as well, I really like SMART goals. SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. That sounds like a lot of work, but these can still be one-sentence goals. An example would be "I want to earn As and Bs in all of my classes by the end of the school year so that I can be proud of my hardwork in school." Students might want to set goals around turning in all of their work on time, focusing more in class, achieving certain scores in iReady, or anything else that they would like to work on. If I can ever help set goals or cheer students on, please just let me know.
Go, Mustangs!
