September is Suicide Prevention Month September is Suicide Prevention Month

September marks National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, an important opportunity for the school district community to focus on student well-being. Navigating adolescence brings unique pressures, making it vital for parents and caregivers to break down mental health stigmas, stay connected, and recognize when young people need help. Simple actions—like asking open-ended questions about stress and actively listening—can make a life-saving difference.

How Families Can Help at Home

  • Keep Communication Open: Ask open-ended questions about how your child is feeling, creating a safe space to discuss stress or school without judgment.

  • Watch for Changes: Pay attention to drastic shifts in mood, sleeping habits, academic performance, or withdrawal from friends and activities.

  • Know Crisis Resources: Keep the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline easily accessible for free, confidential, 24/7 support by call or text.

Local Resources: The Live for Thomas Foundation

Cecil County is home to dedicated local partners working directly to support youth mental wellness. The Live for Thomas Foundation was established in memory of Thomas Ocasio III to promote youth mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and peer support across the community. Families can explore educational resources, support initiatives, and community events on their website at https://www.liveforthomas.org/.

Face-to-Face Support at Den 22

For hands-on, face-to-face support right in North East, MD, families can turn to Den 22. Located at 22 N. Main Street (Unit 1), Den 22 serves as a dedicated physical drop-in space designed specifically for youth and young adults aged 12–24. Anyone can stop in; it's not just for North East families.

  • A Safe Space to Decompress: Students can drop in to unwind, play board or video games, work on creative projects, or relax in a positive environment.

  • Peer & Community Support: Den 22 fosters meaningful connections through supervised activities, snacks, and regular community meals.

  • Immediate Guidance & Help: Staffed with trained support, Den 22 offers peer-to-peer connection, interim counseling resources, and crisis intervention when a young person feels overwhelmed.

Supporting youth mental health is a collaborative effort. By maintaining open conversations at home and connecting with local resources like the Live for Thomas Foundation and Den 22, families and schools can work together to ensure every student feels supported, heard, and valued.
