Focus on Character Focus on Character

This week we will focus on curiosity. We define curiosity as being eager to know or learn something. This is one of our school's core values. Curiosity is natural in children and is vital for lifelong learning and development. You can develop and sustain curiosity in children by modeling curious behavior, fostering an explorative environment, and encouraging their natural interests.

Model Curious Behavior - Children learn by watching adults, so actively demonstrate what it means to be curious:

  • Share your own questions about the world. For example, say, "I wonder why the moon looks different tonight?"
  • When you don't know the answer to a question, be honest and look it up together in a book or online. This teaches them the process of information-seeking and that it's okay not to know everything.

  • Express genuine interest in new experiences, hobbies, and learning. Let them see the joy you get from discovering new things.

Provide an Environment for Discovery

  • Toys like building blocks or simple art materials allow children to use their imagination and figure things out on their own. These encourage unstructured play over toys that only have one function.

  • Follow your child's interests. If they are fascinated by bugs, get books on insects, go on a bug hunt, or visit an entomology exhibit.

  • Introduce them to a variety of real-world experiences. Go on nature walks , visit a library, museum, zoo, or even explore a new part of your town.

  • When they encounter a problem (like a tricky puzzle or building a collapsing tower), don't rush to fix it immediately. Give them time to struggle and problem-solve on their own. This builds confidence and self-reliance.

By actively nurturing a child's questions and providing the time and space for them to explore, you help develop a confident, resilient, and lifelong learner.
