Thought for the week: Our Hair is a Crown We Never Take Off – World Afro Day Celebration
This week, our school community joyfully celebrated World Afro Day with the inspiring theme: “Our hair is a crown we never take off. Celebrate every curl, coil, and strand.”
In form groups, pupils joined in collective worship to reflect on the beauty and uniqueness of hair as part of our God-given identity. We thought about how every curl, coil, and strand tells a story and reminds us of the dignity God gives to each person.
Our celebration continued in assembly, led confidently by the Junior Leadership Team. They shared inspiring messages about self-love, heritage, and pride, reminding us that our hair is not just something we wear, but a crown that shows who we are. The JLT also explained how our Catholic faith grounds this celebration in scripture:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
This verse helped us reflect that the way we are created – including our hair – reflects God’s beauty and creativity. By celebrating one another’s differences, we honour both the uniqueness of every person and the God who made us.
Prayer
Loving God,
Thank You for making each of us in Your image.
Help us to celebrate the beauty of our differences – every curl, coil, and strand – as gifts from You.
May we always treat one another with love, respect, and kindness,
so that our school reflects the joy and unity of Your Kingdom.
Amen.
Year 11 Students went to the Futures fair to start their Careers preparation
On Tuesday 16th September Year 11s went to Woolwich Works for a Greenwich Futures Fair. There were over 30 different stalls made up of companies offering Apprenticeships, 6th forms/colleges and universities.
The students enjoyed exploring the different courses on offer and finding out about the new level of qualifications available such as T levels.
The Futures Fair was a great start to the year for our Year 11 students who will be thinking hard about their Post 16 options this year.

Meet our new teachers
Miss Waliker
Hello everyone, I teach Drama and English. I studied English Literature at university and have always had a real passion for reading and storytelling. Alongside teaching, I love performing and continue to act in amateur productions whenever I can. Before joining this school, I worked at a school in Hertfordshire, and prior to that I taught at a Shakespearean drama school, which really fuelled my love for theatre. I’m really excited to be here and to share my enthusiasm for both literature and drama with my students.
Mrs. McFarlane-Gordon
In my lessons I aim to make math's relevant and to develop reasoning and problem-solving skills that pupils can apply across subjects. Outside of school I enjoy baking and walking, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know the pupils and families at St. Ursula's.
Ms Bielen
I am a Language teacher in the MFL department. I speak four other languages, which has given me a unique access to different cultures, among others, Slavic, Hispanic, Lusophone and Anglo-Saxon and, at the same time, different outlooks on the world surrounding us.
I’m truly passionate about Philosophy and Music and would love to bring in more of this into my lessons. My goal is to spread my passion for languages in the students at St. Ursula's and to make them realise that learning a language is a very useful life-skill that goes well beyond the GCSE’s.
English are looking for a Poet Laureate
What do I have to do to become St. Ursula's Poet Laureate?
What is a Poet Laureate?
It is someone who is honoured for their achievements and is appointed to compose poems for very special occasions.
Simon Armitage ( shown in the picture) is the current UK poet laureate. he has written poems for occasions such as the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth.
You will need to write an entry poem celebrating Black History Month. Poems can be handed to ANY English teacher by 30th September 2025
