HOW DO WE MEET OUR TITLE III REQUIREMENTS?
That is the million-dollar question. The best thing the LEA can do is to align their Title III engagement activities with their needs assessment.
Think about these questions:
- What do your Title III families need?
- What community services could supply some of the academic, linguistic, or even social needs your Title III students and parents have?
- What does your data say about the college and career readiness of your ELs?
Perhaps answering with more questions is not ideal, but those questions can truly help LEAs brainstorm ideas to move beyond the compliance mindset into really finding ways to meet the needs of your Title III families.
To answer the original question, how do we meet our Title III requirements? Take a close look at the academic, linguistic, and social needs of our EB families and find creative ways to meet them.

Did You Know: Monarch Butterflies
To many, the monarch butterfly is the most beautiful and most fascinating creature in the insect world. Monarch butterflies will begin their 2,500+ mile journey to Southern California and Mexico in late August and September. These international travelers return to the same forests each year, and some even find the same tree that their ancestors landed on. Some estimates say up to a billion butterflies arrive in the mountains of México each year. However, threats to the monarch butterflies' habitat and food source are making the migration more difficult, and monarchs are now on the endangered species list.
When we think of the monarch butterfly and both it's transformation from egg to butterfly and its migration journey, we can't help but think of the multilingual students we all serve. Like the monarch butterfly, our multilingual students transform from being monolingual to multilingual and the journey to the school they attend may have been a journey of many miles. YOU play a huge role in the success of that transformation and journey. Monarch butterfly farmers and language teachers both start with raw potential in their hands. Farmers have butterfly eggs, while language teachers have language learners with varying levels of proficiency. Their primary responsibility is to nurture this potential and facilitate growth.
Just as the monarch butterfly's transformation contributes to the ecosystem, language acquisition opens up new opportunities for communication, understanding diverse cultures, and connecting with people from different backgrounds. Language fluency allows individuals to participate more actively in global conversations, expand their horizons, and enrich their personal and professional lives.
So, as we marvel at the magnificent journey of the monarch butterflies, let us also celebrate the incredible journey of our multilingual students. Let us continue to inspire, educate, and empower them, knowing that through their language fluency, they, too, will take flight and leave a lasting impact on our interconnected world.
