¿hablas español? 💬 parles-tu français

We were delighted to welcome families to our Foreign Language Open House this week, where parents had the opportunity to observe their children's progress in Spanish and French. Our JC scholars demonstrated oral language skills through conversations, interactive games, and musical performances in their chosen foreign language. The open house provided families with a glimpse into their children's daily learning experiences and highlighted the strength of our foreign language magnet program.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Gryak (Spanish teacher), Mrs. Barnett (Spanish teacher), and Mrs. Leger (French teacher) for their preparation and leadership in organizing this event. Their dedication to our foreign language program and commitment to showcasing student learning made this event memorable. We also thank the families who attended and supported their children's. Your participation and encouragement play a vital role in your child's continued success in language learning.

Reading Buddies 📚 Reading Buddies 📚

What a sight it was to see our 4th graders head down to PreK this week to read! Our littlest scholars could barely contain their excitement as their big buddies walked into their classroom, ready for some special story time together. The pairs wandered around picking out just the right books, found their perfect cozy reading spots, and settled in for some one-on-one reading magic. It was wonderful watching our 4th graders patiently sound out words and use funny voices while our PreK friends hung on every word. Thanks to the great teamwork between our PreK and 4th grade teachers.

Book of the Month đź“– - Eyes that Kiss in the Corners Book of the Month đź“– - Eyes that Kiss in the Corners

In May, we honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrate Grandparents Day on Friday, May 9, and recognize Mother’s Day—a perfect time to share Eyes that Kiss in the Corners, a radiant picture book that celebrates culture, family, and the beauty found in our differences.

This lyrical story follows a young Taiwanese girl who notices that her eyes look different from those of her classmates. While they have big, round eyes with long lashes, hers “kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea.” At first, she wishes to look like her peers—until she comes to see that her eyes are just like her mother’s, her little sister’s, and her Amah’s (grandmother’s). Her eyes hold stories from generations before her—stories filled with love, tradition, and pride.

Written by Joanna Ho and illustrated by Dung Ho, Eyes that Kiss in the Corners is a tender and empowering tribute to self-love, cultural heritage, and the bonds between mothers, daughters, and grandmothers. It’s a book that helps young readers see the beauty in themselves and the strength in where they come from.

As we read, students are invited to reflect on what makes them special and the meaningful connections they share with the women in their lives.
