Principal's Notes Principal's Notes

I'm sending out the newsletter one day early as I will not be in the building on Friday. I hope you all have a great long weekend.

Thank you to the Norwell Fire Department for coming to Cole School this week to teach Fire Safety and Prevention Week lessons. Hopefully your child(ren) can share a few takeaways from the lessons with them!

School pictures are coming home soon. Class pictures will be sent home when we receive picture retake packages. Every student will receive a class picture. If there are any questions or concerns about school pictures, please contact Coffee Pond directly at:

By phone: 1-508-907-6633
By email: Lifeguards@ coffeepond.com

The small plastic "ducks" and other animal figures have either been limited to 10 minutes of trading time or not allowed at recess at all depending on how it is going with each grade level. As a reminder, they are not allowed in classrooms at all. They have caused a few disruptions on the bus so please check in with your child to decide whether or not they should continue bringing them to school.

Norwell Schools Leadership Team visited Cole School on Thursday and observed teaching and learning in several classrooms. They enjoyed seeing our students so engaged in their learning.

Conferences will be held during the week of October 20th. There will be an early release for conferences on Thursday, October 23rd with all students dismissed at 12:20pm. The conference letter for sign ups will be sent home by email tomorrow.

Magnificent Meerkats Magnificent Meerkats

We had a huge group of Magnificent Meerkats this week! These students were nominated for being helpful, inclusive, and hard working! These types of consistent and expected behaviors each day make Cole School an amazing community! Thank you, Magnificent Meerkats!

This week, students started having Second Step lessons in their classrooms, led by their teachers. The next unit will be about Bullying Prevention, which teaches students how to recognize, report, and refuse bullying behavior. Next week, I will work with each grade level to identify students who could benefit from Tier 3 social-emotional support, based on the screeners teachers and students completed over the past few weeks. This means students could be in a small group once a week, for 6-8 weeks, to build skills like self-regulation or coping. If we feel your child could benefit, their teacher will reach out and a permission slip will be sent home. I will be starting my maternity leave on Monday 10/20, so my substitute, Anna Mullen, will be running these groups. If you need me in the meantime, please reach out at anne.walsh@norwellschools.org.

PANS/PANDAS Awareness Day – October 9th

Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) are conditions that can cause a sudden and dramatic onset of symptoms such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, tics, mood changes, or academic difficulties.

Teachers and parents are often among the first to notice when a child’s health or behavior shifts abruptly. My job as a school nurse is to bring awareness of PANS/PANDAS, as it allows us to support families in seeking appropriate medical evaluation and to collaborate with educators in providing a compassionate, supportive learning environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to both me and your child’s pediatrician.

PE Happenings

Kindergarteners and first graders practiced tossing and catching underhand with a partner and at a target. Grade 2 practiced lead passes and played a fun throwing game called Farmer Frenzy. Practicing their throwing, second graders turned into farmers to fill up chicken coops/buckets with eggs/balls. Grades 3-5 played a throwing and catching game called Dice Bonk and Team Handball. Working together as a team, students tried to throw the ball into the opposing team’s goal or at the dice while defending.
