Dear Parents/Guardians:

I hope the winter break was pleasant and relaxing. We are back to school on January 5 with energy and enthusiasm to finish the first semester and then begin our second semester of our school year.

At Burnside, we use PBIS, a proactive approach schools use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. At Burnside, we work hard to be safe, kind, and responsible and we talk about this daily in our morning announcements and within our classrooms. Thank you for helping to reinforce SAFE, KIND, and RESPONSIBLE.

The Danger Zones are the areas anywhere outside of the bus where children are in the most danger of being hit, either by another vehicle or their own bus.

The danger zones extend as much as 30 feet from the front bumper, 10 feet from the left and right sides of the bus and 12 feet behind the rear bumper of the school bus. Also, area to the left of the bus is always considered dangerous because of passing vehicles. The figure below illustrates these danger zones.

Many third grade students have joined Burnside's Kindness Club, led by Mr. Lahammer and Mr. Albers. In December, Kindness Club partnered with Hope & Harbor Homeless Shelter and led a donation drive for individually packaged snacks for unhoused individuals in the Red Wing area. Last year, Kindness Club gathered enough snacks to last through February! This year, Mr. Lahammer said, the students gathered so much more!

After the holiday break, many students may have receieved cell phones or smart watches. This is a reminder that students are prohibited from using personal cell phones and other electronic devices during the instructional day. These devices must be stored in silent or “off” mode from the student’s arrival at school until dismissal. A cell phone or other device used or visible during the instructional day will be confiscated and a parent will be expected to pick up the device. Other consequences may also be assigned.

In the upcoming months, our building will be practicing lockdowns as outlined in MN statute 121A.035. We wanted to provide you with information about our training and responses. Our first drills will be around Hold & Secure. See more information below.

For the last couple school years, Burnside had been lucky enough to be joined one day a week by Daisy, a certified therapy dog, who has graduated to the high school.

This year, we are very fortunate to be adding Huck to our staff. He is a five year old miniature Australian Shepherd. He is certified as a therapy dog through ATD. Huck is owned by our Due Process Secretary, Laura Wyttenbach. The goals of having a therapy dog are to bring joy and smiles to Burnside, provide comfort and/or reduce stress and anxiety for students; and, to encourage growth and build confidence in students who are facing academic and/or social emotional challenges.

Per District Policy 536, if you would prefer your child not have exposure to Huck due to allergies, fear, cultural view, or for any other reason, please contact Principal Jennifer Grove at jpgrove@rwps.org. If you have any questions about Huck, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Students arriving to school with time to spare are able to settle in, get their breakfast, greet their teachers and classmates, and focus their minds on the lessons to come. Students arriving late miss out on this natural transition period, and chronic tardiness may cause students to struggle with academic focus and relationships with peers.

Showing up on time to school every day can help students develop the habit of being punctual and it shows them your commitment to their learning and friendships. Being on time also helps reduce classroom interruptions and distractions for all students. Missing just 15 minutes of school twice a week equates to 3 missed school days per year!

In January, Mrs. Wallerich, our PE teacher, will be running a fundraiser for Jump Rope for Heart. We will send out more information to you as it becomes available.

In February, we will have our annual APEX Fun Run, which will be for Burnside's Innovative Learning Fund. This fund has allowed us to purchase classroom materials for our UFLI lessons and book clubs, transportation to field trips, including our upcoming Sheldon Fieldtrips, as well as alkternative seating options for students.
