AVID 11 creates posters for Safe Walk to School Day Oct 7th!
Pedestrian and Bicycle safety has been at the top of many CHS student and teacher minds' since last Spring when we collaborated on a survey for a grant for a Feasibility Study about sidewalks and/or a bike path on Turkey Point leading to the school. Our Avid 11 students are leading a project to highlight the importance of safe routes to school on October 7th (wear your NEON for safety!). They have invited community members to come talk about their experiences and see what walking at dismissal is like! If you would like to attend this event please email jmyhre@baltimorecountymd.gov for more info! There will also be a Community Meeting about the Sidewalks on 11/18/26 at CHS so please save the date for that!
FALS students learn gardening skills!
FALS students in Ms. Shields’ class have been working in the greenhouse to water plants and grow vegetables with the help of Mrs. Blevins. We are growing lettuce and tomatoes! We hope to be eating a yummy homegrown salad soon!

MCCEI Construction Career Day at M&T Bank Stadium
On September 16th, 20 CHS students along with our Career Navigator, Mr. Scalice, and our Work-based Learning Coordinator, Ms. Boyd, worked alongside skilled trade professionals to learn hands on skills for various trades and construction opportunities. It was a great way for students to learn about future careers and connect with educational pathways to do so!
BAYHAWKS & THE COMMUNITY
A BIG thank you to our Community Donors!
On Saturday, September 26th, the CHS staff & football programs honored the amazing support from 8 Community Members to provide funding for additional football helmets. In August, we had the terrible problem of having too many interested kids for football and not enough helmets to keep everyone safe. A few quick phone calls to the Essex Community Development Corporation and our problem now had a solution. 8 Community members pulled together to raise almost $4,000 for 10 helmets allowing our program to grow and our students to be safe. We are beyond grateful for their swift action and support of CHS.
Thank you to Chrissy Erb for coordinating and to all of our donors:
- Delegate Ric Metzgar
- Cliff O’Connell – Cliffs Direct Effect
- Nathan Barlo – - Sr. VP of Ops, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center
- Todd Schuler - Blondell, Miller & Schuler - Injury Lawyers
- Lavin Reid – Reid’s Jerk Shack
- Mark Miller - Autumn Lake at Riverview
- Amy Stern – Essex Plaza
Boys Soccer Battle of the Birds
On Tuesday, September 29th, we played our Rivalry Game at Kenwood High School. The Battle of the Birds was created to spur fun and positive rivalry spirit between the two schools to increase school pride and community connection through sports! This year, this series of games is completely sponsored by community partners! Thanks to Essex Community Development Corporation, Yoga Mouth Collective, Essex Day, Essex/Middle River Heritage Society, Potomac Pizza, Weaver's Marina, Exile Fitness, Maryland Heating and Air, Ravens Nest 36, Trade Point Atlantic, Icy Delights, Fast Signs White Marsh, Mustangs Pizza and Delegate Ric Metzgar. Their donations went to purchase shits for players and fans and to host a participant party at the end of the year!
They Bluebirds came out on top this time, 3-0. But we are ready for them for Girls and Boys Basketball this winter and Lacrosse & Softball this Spring! Shout out to Alum, Abel Valencia, for the action shots from the game.
Essex Day - September 19th
We had such a great time at the Essex Day Festival. We brought out all the old CHS yearbooks and got to connect with a ton of Bayhawk Alumni! It was so cool to hear about your memories from your time at CHS and also see the generations of Bayhawks together! If you would a like a copy of a yearbook for free, please fill out this form and our Community School Facilitator, Ms. Miller will reach out to you! Chesapeake's 50th anniversary is fast approaching and we would love to increase our alumni network for that!
Attendance Rewards!
We had 613 students with perfect attendance for the week of 9/14-9/18 get acknowledged on Tuesday, Sept 22nd. That is 70% of our school! Please keep encouraging your student(s) to be present!
If your child missed getting at treat this time, we will be doing random celebration days for 'Perfect Week Attendance' each month through the school year. Being present EVERY DAY is the best way to increase their chances.
We also have an awesome incentive coming on 10/23 for all students with 90% attendance and above by 10/22. We will have a BMX tour assembly (pd 2) along with a peta2 Ice Cream Truck at all lunches on 10/23!
Every absence, excused or unexcused impacts the attendance rate so to meet the goal, students have to be present every day possible. Students were shown yesterday how to check their attendance rate on focus during Grade Checks so they should be keeping a close eye on it. Parents should also be getting updates from the school. In order to attend the 10/23 assembly, a student cannot miss more than 4 days total for the combined school year to date.
Lastly, shout out to the JUNIORS for having the Highest Attendance Rate so far this school year!
Overall school wide attendance rate: 93.01% (which is our goal!!!)
Grade 9 - 91.32%
Grade 10- 92.42%
Grade 11 - 94.58%
Grade 12 - 94.47%

Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability (DEPS) is continuing its program of aerial midge suppression treatments along the county’s eastern shorelines to reduce nuisance populations of swarming midges. Trained, certified technicians conduct the spraying in accordance with MDE and MDA regulations and industry best practices, spraying a Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti)-based, non-toxic naturally-occurring larvicide from a low-flying helicopter during daylight hours. Attendance/Lateness/Early Dismissal Guidelines
Attendance: Regular school attendance has a direct impact on a student’s academic success. It is the key to high school graduation and college and career readiness. Research has proven that students who regularly attend school and are on time are more likely to read on grade level, less likely to drop out of school, and more likely to attend all classes that have been assigned to them. Our goal as a school this year is to have 93% attendance or higher!
If a student must be absent from school, the student must present an absence note to the Main Office within 3 days after returning to school. The note must include the student's name, grade level, date of absence, the reason for the absence and must be signed by a parent or guardian. If a student is absent for more than three consecutive days, a doctor/physician's note must also be presented. Notes can be directly uploaded into Focus by using the steps outlined in the Parent Guide below.
Early Dismissal: Requests for early dismissal should be brought to the Main Office before 7:45 AM. The notes must be signed by a parent/guardian with the time and date to be excused, a parent contact number, and the reason for the early dismissal. Unplanned early dismissals must be arranged by the nurse or the Main Office. Students must sign out in the Main Office before leaving school property. Anyone who signs the student out must have a valid ID and be on our list of those who have approval to pick up the student. Therefore, we must have correct contact information on file yearly.
Lateness: To maximize instructional time, it is important that students arrive on time to school. For a student to be counted as present for a full day, the student must be in attendance four hours or more of the school day. All students who arrive after 7:45 AM must sign in at the late check-in kiosk in the main lobby to pick up a late pass before being admitted to class. A signed note from a guardian explaining the reason for the lateness is required at the time of arrival in order for the lateness to be excused. More information on the Lateness procedure below.
Lateness Procedures
All students are expected to be in their classrooms by 7:45am. All late students, arriving to school or class after 7:45 AM, are expected to scan in at the Attendance Kiosk. The Attendance Kiosk is in the main entrance vestibule and will be operated by one of our secretaries. Students must have access to their BCPS Student ID barcode to scan in at the kiosk. All student have access to their ID badge via their FOCUS App. Steps for how to access your ID Badge via the Team BCPS Focus App linked below.
Attendance Kiosk Procedure:
· After the 7:45 AM bell, students arriving late, and students still in the halls and not on time for class, will be expected to sign-in at the Attendance Kiosk.
· The Kiosk will scan the student’s ID and mark them as tardy in Focus.
· The Kiosk will provide a “Tardy Slip” that includes the students name, ID, teacher, and room number. The “Tardy Slip” will serve as the students pass to class.
